Rolex Oyster Veriflat 18K Yellow Gold Ref. 6512

We proudly present the Rolex Veriflat reference 6512, a model rarely encountered and one whose name speaks for itself. Designed as an ultra-slim dress watch while retaining the robustness of an Oyster case, the Veriflat occupies a unique place in Rolex history. With a total thickness of just 8 mm, it remains to this day the thinnest Oyster-cased Rolex ever produced.

Manufactured in very limited numbers between the mid-1950s and early 1960s, only a few hundred examples were made, exclusively in precious metals. This rarity alone makes the Veriflat one of the most intriguing and collectible vintage Rolex references.

This particular example dates back to 1957 and is crafted in 18k yellow gold. Its 34 mm case enhances the watch’s elegant and understated presence on the wrist. The remarkably reduced thickness is what truly sets this piece apart from its Oyster-cased counterparts. Rolex achieved this through an innovative knurling technique on the case back, resulting in a completely flat surface that was highly advanced for its time.

Powering the watch is a rare variation of the calibre 1030, known as the calibre 1000, featuring a small seconds sub-dial at 6 o’clock. This manually wound Precision movement was deliberately chosen to preserve the ultra-slim profile, as the automatic rotor Rolex was famous for would have added unwanted thickness and made a flat case back impossible. As a result, Rolex succeeded in creating a remarkably thin movement measuring only 3.45 mm in height.

We can all agree that this watch has been through a lot; however, this only adds to its character and sense of age. The dial displays unique and expressive signs of aging that will particularly appeal to collectors who appreciate a watch with a story. Enhancing its vintage character even further, the bold Dauphine hands complete the piece as a true representation of Rolex’s timeless design language.

Rolex is the absolute king of everyday watches. If it is haute horlogerie or the pinnacle of artistry in finishing techniques you are after, look elsewhere. But for pure everyday function, ruggedness and refinement, Rolex wears the crown.

The brand was founded by Alfred Davis and Hans Wilsdorf in London in 1905. In 1908, the name “Rolex” was registered. The brand would put a host of firsts and records to its name in the decades that followed. From the first chronometer rated wristwatch in 1910 to the first wristwatch with a water resistance of 100 meters in 1953.

A range of waterproofing measures, among which a screw-down-crown, resulted in the famous Oyster case. Up to this day it is the basic platform on which the vast majority of Rolex watches is built. Model names often feature both the Oyster (water resistance) and Perpetual (self-winding movement) terminology, followed by a specific model designation such as Datejust or Submariner.

Both modern and vintage Rolex watches are highly sought-after. They are broadly appreciated for their timeless designs, functional toughness, reliability, brand recognition and value retention.
