Rolex Explorer I Ref. 1016 Gilt

We are very proud to present this stunning Rolex Explorer Ref. 1016 from 1966!

The ref. 1060 is perhaps one of the most admired vintage Rolex models around. And for good reason! It is a masterclass in watch design. Clean, elegant, rugged and quite simply beautiful.

This example was imported to the USA by Rolex, as you can deduct from the ‘ROW’ code in the unique movement number. It comes on an American-style Jubilee bracelet, also dating to 1966.

The dial is true gilt, meaning negative black painting on a bare brass dial. The result is gold-tone text laying deeper than the surrounding black surface. An absolutely beautiful technique that is, unfortunately, no longer used. The dial and hands have been relumed at some point, they hold a little more charge than you would expect from old tritium. It has been done very, very well though, perfect in color and neatly applied.
