Rolex Cellini ref. 3736
The Rolex Cellini reference 3736 reflects a quieter and more refined side of the Rolex universe. Far removed from the sporty, tool-watch identity the brand is best known for, the Cellini line was created to offer something more dressy, more elegant, and often a little more design-driven. This particular reference dates to the 1970s and shows exactly that side of Rolex at its best.
Crafted in 18k white gold, this example stands out for its compact 29 x 29 mm “cushion-shaped” case. That soft square form gives the watch a distinctly period character, while still feeling elegant and surprisingly modern on the wrist. Combined with the silver dial and leather strap, the overall look remains calm, balanced, and quietly distinctive.
What makes the ref. 3736 especially appealing is its case. At roughly 6 mm thick, it has the kind of slim profile one hopes for in a vintage dress watch, and that goes a long way in how refined it feels on the wrist. There is no need here for obvious sportiness or excess. Its charm lies in proportion, material, and the confidence of a design that does not need to try too hard. Additionaly, just look at that crown on the caseback; we love it.
Just like all the Cellini’s, the ref. 3736 offers a less expected and more dressy side of vintage Rolex. It is the kind of watch that tends to appeal to those who already know the more familiar Rolex icons and are looking for something a little more personal, a little more elegant, and far less obvious. Exactly the kind of piece that quietly grows on you.

The Cellini line is certainly not the most recognizable or famous line within the Rolex universe. But is a range full of gems and simply stunning watches.
Rolex is known for its rugged sports watches like the Submariner and Daytona. Even the dressier options such as the Datejust and Day-Date seem to approach the dress-theme from a tool-ish, ready-to-go angle. No wonder then that it took some marketing genius to deviate from this path in the 1950’s. René-Paul Jeanneret was Marketing Director at Rolex and introduced the idea of Rolex collectors.
The notion that one person might collect multiple Rolex watches was completely new. Up until then, Rolex made specialist watches for specialist professionals. Now, the brand would focus on offering different watches for different occasions. The Cellini line, named after Italian scultor and goldsmith Benvenuto Cellini, was born.
From the 1960’s onwards, the Cellini line was used as a playground for numerous different shapes and types of dress watches. From minimalist thin, Calatrava-style watches to the extremes of the King Midas.
Today, the Cellini collection is the only place within the Rolliverse where you will find hints at haute-horlogerie through features such as guilloché dials and moon-phase indicators. Precious materials and beautiful finishing techniques are omnipresent.
The Cellini was put into the public eye by Barack Obama, who was frequently spotted wearing one. A fine choice! The Cellini line is where you want to be looking if you are after a high-end Rolex that people will not instantly recognize as such!
