Patek Philippe Calatrava 2572
At Amsterdam Watch Company, we cherish watches that not only keep time but also transcend generations. This Patek Philippe Calatrava, reference 2572 from 1958, is the ultimate proof of this. It reminds us of the brand’s famous promise: “You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You only care for it for the next generation.”
The purity of the Calatrava.
Introduced in 1932, the Calatrava is the most authentic embodiment of the classic dress watch. Its design is deeply rooted in the Bauhaus style, where form follows function. This results in a watch that excels with its extremely simple, yet perfectly executed aesthetic.
This particular example from 1958 is crafted from beautiful 18-karat rose gold. What makes this model particularly rare is its 36 mm diameter. In the 1950s, this was considered “oversized,” while today it is the perfect, modern size for an elegant wristwatch. At just 8 mm thick, this Calatrava slips effortlessly under a shirt cuff.
The silver-colored dial is in exceptional condition and exudes a serene tranquility. The details are executed with Swiss precision:
Gold accent: The dial features yellow gold baton-shaped hands that contrast beautifully with the rose gold case.
Sub-seconds: At 6 o’clock, a sub-dial for the seconds is located, a classic feature that adds depth to the minimalist design.
The crown: The famous Patek Philippe logo is subtly incorporated into the crown, a sign of its undisputed provenance.
Under the hood lies the renowned in-house caliber 10-200. This manually wound movement is a technical masterpiece with a rectilinear escapement and a monometallic balance. It is a timepiece built on the pillars of Patek Philippe: tradition, innovation, and absolute excellence.
This ref. The 2572 is more than just a watch; it’s a monument to horological history.
In our store on Reestraat, we see this piece as the blueprint for what a dress watch should be: understated, elegant, and of unparalleled quality.

We’re here to help.
In 1932, the year in which brothers Charles and Jean Stern acquired Patek Philippe, the name of the manufacture’s prestigious symbol, the Calatrava cross, was given to a watch collection. The first true ‘family’ of watches Patek Philippe had created, the Calatrava quickly became a classic and is still regarded today as the brand’s most iconic collection.
The design was inspired by the Bauhaus movement, a German school of Arts based on the belief that ‘less is more’ and ‘form follows function’. Since the purpose of a watch is to tell the time, these principles discouraged any embellishments which could detract from the time-telling.
The result was a watch that was at once beautiful and practical. Presented in a round case with a flat bezel and simple dial with baton indices, the art of omission in the debut model Ref. 96, came to characterize the Calatrava’s understated, yet timeless style.
The design has become a template for other brands. A simple, minimalist dress watch with a sub-dial for the seconds at six o’clock, is often referred to as a Calatrava watch, regardless of the brand. So while Patek did it first, it is perfectly reasonable to stumble upon a JLC Calatrava or a Vacheron Constantin Calatrava.
