Chopard lady 18 White gold
This has become a beautiful story that bridges the gap between Swiss precision and German goldsmithing, perfect for the Amsterdam Watch Company collection.
The fusion of watchmaking and Haute Joaillerie: The Chopard Cushion (1975).
In the world of vintage watches, there are pieces that measure time, and there are pieces that capture it. This 1975 18-karat white gold Chopard women’s watch undeniably belongs to the latter category. It is a rare find that marks the turning point when the watch definitively transformed from an instrument to a piece of jewelry.
The story of this particular design actually begins in 1963, when Karl Scheufele III, a visionary goldsmith from the German “gold city” of Pforzheim, took over the House of Chopard. Scheufele brought with him a unique expertise: the art of intricately weaving precious metals. Under his leadership, the vision emerged where the case and bracelet were no longer separate components, but formed a single, fluid, integrated whole. This 1975 example is the ultimate proof of this. The refined, hand-woven filigree mesh bracelet flows seamlessly into the white gold case, allowing the watch to drape itself like a delicate silk fabric.
While the letters “L.U.” on the dial subtly reference founder Louis-Ulysse Chopard, the exterior exudes pure “High Jewelry”:
The case: A bold cushion shape, which offered a modern and powerful alternative to traditional round women’s watches in the 1970s.
The fittings: The bezel is set with 26 natural, brilliant-cut diamonds of the exceptionally high quality for which Chopard is renowned.
The heart: Inside, houses the ETA 4520 caliber, an extremely flat, hand-wound movement. It was precisely this technical slenderness that allowed the designers to achieve the elegant, flat design so characteristic of this era.
The silver dial is deliberately minimalist. No distractions, just the “Swiss Made” designation. This underscores the philosophy of this cocktail watch: a piece of jewelry that also happens to tell the time.
Measuring 23 x 20 mm, it’s an understated yet unmistakable statement of luxury. A heirloom from a time when craftsmanship was still literally hand-woven.
