Het horloge van de president! De Rolex Day-Date is waarschijnlijk een van de meest herkenbare horlogeontwerpen ooit gemaakt. Omdat het alleen verkrijgbaar is in edelmetalen, is het synoniem geworden met succes en prestige. Een horloge om prestaties te vieren.

De Day-Date werd in 1956 gelanceerd als Ref. 6510 en Ref. 6511. Het was het eerste horloge dat zowel de dag van de week als de datum weergaf, vandaar de naam. Het werd geüpdatet naar Ref. 6611, waarmee het Superlative Chronometer- certificaat werd toegevoegd. De 6611 is de enige Day-Date die ooit in staal is gemaakt, maar er zijn slechts zes exemplaren van bekend.

En van 1959 tot eind jaren 70 zien we de populairste vintage Day-Date: de 1800-serie. Dit is de archetypische Day-Date die we allemaal kennen en waarderen. Lyndon B. Johnson werd er in 1965 mee gespot, waardoor de bijnaam President’s Watch zich stevig in het collectieve geheugen nestelde.

Een update uit 1977 introduceerde een snelverstelfunctie voor de datum in de nieuwe 18000-referentieserie. Pas in 1988 kreeg de 18200-serie een snelverstelfunctie voor de dag, wat de dubbele snelverstelfunctie werd .

De Day-Date is verkrijgbaar in geelgoud, witgoud, roségoud en platina. Talloze wijzerplaatvarianten omvatten hout, steen en Stella. Van de vele beschikbare kast- en bandafwerkingen is de schors waarschijnlijk het meest bekend, omdat deze lijkt op het onregelmatige patroon van boomschors. De Day-Date is een van de weinige Rolex-modellen met fabrieksmatig met edelstenen bezette bezels en wijzerplaten als optie.

De Day-Date is een icoon in de popcultuur. Het waren niet alleen Amerikaanse presidenten zoals Johnson en Kennedy die hem op de kaart zetten. Van Tony Soprano tot Tupac Shakur, van Warren Buffett tot Jennifer Aniston, ze werden allemaal gespot met een Day-Date. Ben jij de volgende?
