Rolex Datejust Ref.16220 (Rolex service dial)

A blue icon from 1989.

In the world of vintage watches, there’s one model that not only stands the test of time but also seems to improve with each passing decade: the Rolex Datejust. But anyone who truly delves into the nuances of watchmaking knows that not all Datejusts are created equal. At Amsterdam Watch Company, we understand that it’s the details that transform a watch from a luxury utility item into a collector’s item with a story.

The year is 1989. While the world is shaken to its core by political shifts, Rolex introduces the Reference 16220. It’s a watch that combines the robustness of the ’80s with the refinement we still strive for today. With its 36mm case, this piece has the classic dimensions that look perfect with both a suit and a casual outfit.

The “Railroad Track” and the Service Dial.
What makes this particular piece so intriguing is the deep blue dial. If you look closely at the bezel, you’ll see the double circle of Roman numerals, colloquially known as the “railroad track.” It gives the watch an architectural depth rarely seen in modern versions.
This watch also features a Rolex service dial. To the untrained eye, this is merely a dial, but for the connoisseurs at Amsterdam Watch Company, it’s a sign of a well-maintained life. This authentic replacement, performed by Rolex itself, guarantees that the watch not only retains its visual splendor but also continues to functionally meet the Swiss watchmaker’s highest standards. It’s the ultimate affirmation of authenticity: no “aftermarket” modifications, but pure Rolex craftsmanship.
The combination of the smooth bezel and the iconic Oyster bracelet gives this 16220 a character that deviates from the norm. While a fluted white gold bezel sparkles and draws attention, this version opts for a more understated, sportier look. It’s the definition of the “everyday” Rolex:
Versatile: Less flashy than gold, yet undeniably stylish thanks to its blue dial.
Technically superior: Equipped with the Quickset function, which allows you to change the date in an instant.

Vintage watches are about more than just time; they’re about preservation and expertise. That’s precisely where Amsterdam Watch Company makes the difference. They don’t just see a watch from 1989; they see the history of the 16220 series, the value of an official service dial, and the unique charm of a railroad track.
In a world of fleeting trends, a steel Datejust with a blue dial remains a beacon of good taste. It’s a piece of jewelry that proves that true class never goes out of style.

The Rolex Datejust is one of the most iconic watch designs ever made. We try not to use the term “iconic” too liberally, but it is surely justified here. Launched back in 1945 as the Ref. 4467, the design has been only marginally updated every now and then. And it has looked fresh and current ever since.

When it comes to vintage, two generations of Datejust are particularly popular; the Ref. 16xx and the later five-digit references. The 16xx models were made from the fifties until  roughly 1978 and feature a beautifully dimensional pie-pan dial. Many of these came on folded jubilee bracelets and they did not yet feature a quickset date.

When the reference was updated to five digits around 1978, the pie-pan dial was replaced by a flat dial. The caliber was updated to now feature a quickset date. A decade later, in 1988, a new update saw the introduction of a sapphire crystal. For us, this is where vintage Datejust becomes modern Datejust.

Countless variations can be found. Different bezels, bracelets, dial colors, sizes and materials. The Datejust is one of the most beloved and versatile watches around. If you are looking for a one-watch-collection, that works equally well with shorts as it does with a three-piece suit, the Datejust is probably a pretty safe bet!
