The Enduring Legacy of the Rolex Datejust.

The Rolex Datejust is one of the most iconic watch designs ever created. We try not to use the term ‘iconic’ too broadly, but here it is certainly justified. The design, which was launched in 1945 as Ref. 4467, has only been marginally updated on occasion. Yet, it has looked fresh and current ever since.

When it comes to vintage, two generations of Datejust are particularly popular: the Ref. 1600 series and the later five-digit references. The 16xx models were produced from the 1950s until about 1978 and feature a beautiful, three-dimensional ‘pie-pan’ dial. Many of these models came with a folded Jubilee bracelet and were not yet equipped with a quick-set date function.

When the reference was updated to five digits around 1978, the ‘pie-pan’ dial was replaced with a flat dial. The calibre was updated and now featured a quick-set date function. Ten years later, in 1988, a further update introduced a sapphire crystal. For us, this is the point where the vintage Datejust transitions into a modern Datejust.

Countless variations are possible. Different bezels, bracelets, dial colours, sizes, and materials are available. The Datejust is one of the most beloved and versatile watches out there.
