Rolex Datejust Lady Ref. 6901

This Rolex Datejust Lady Ref. 6901 is a small watch with a wonderfully rich presence. At 26 mm, it carries the classic Lady-Datejust proportions, but the combination of yellow gold and a Tiger Eye dial gives this example a much warmer, more individual character.

Here at AWCO we think the dial steals the show in this piece. Its Tiger Eye stone surface shows natural horizontal bands in deep brown and golden tones, shifting beautifully with the light. Rolex kept the layout clean, with applied baton hour markers, matching hands and the familiar date window at three o’clock. It gives the watch that unmistakable Datejust practicality, while the stone dial adds a much more decorative, almost jewellery-like feel.

The 18k yellow gold case is fitted with an acrylic crystal and a Florentine-finished bezel, adding a soft vintage sparkle and a subtle textured frame around the dial. The caseback and lugs show the warm brushed and polished surfaces one hopes for in a late-seventies gold Rolex.

Dating to circa 1978, this Ref. 6901 sits right in that charming vintage Datejust era: compact, elegant and full of personality. Inside is Rolex’s automatic calibre 2030, a compact movement from the era that suits the watch’s 26 mm case beautifully. The Lady-Datejust was introduced in 1957 as Rolex’s smaller take on the Datejust formula, and this Tiger Eye example shows how playful that formula could become. The Rolex Datejust is one of the most iconic watch designs ever made. We try not to use the term “iconic” too liberally, but it is surely justified here. Launched back in 1945 as the Ref. 4467, the design has been only marginally updated every now and then. And it has looked fresh and current ever since.

When it comes to vintage, two generations of Datejust are particularly popular; the Ref. 16xx and the later five-digit references. The 16xx models were made from the fifties until roughly 1978 and feature a beautifully dimensional pie-pan dial. Many of these came on folded jubilee bracelets and they did not yet feature a quickset date.

When the reference was updated to five digits around 1978, the pie-pan dial was replaced by a flat dial. The caliber was updated to now feature a quickset date. A decade later, in 1988, a new update saw the introduction of a sapphire crystal. For us, this is where vintage Datejust becomes modern Datejust.

Countless variations can be found. Different bezels, bracelets, dial colors, sizes and materials. The Datejust is one of the most beloved and versatile watches around.
