A. Lange & Söhne saxomat langmatik Ref. 308.031 B + SP
The A. Lange & Söhne Langematik Sax-O-Mat reference 308.031 is one of those watches that quietly shows why Lange became so respected again after its revival in the 1990s. At first glance, it is beautifully restrained: a 37 mm pink gold case, black dial, outsized date, small seconds, and all the symmetry and calm you would hope for from Glashütte watchmaking. But turn it over, and the real magic starts to appear in its open case back.
This reference is powered by Lange’s automatic calibre L921.4, part of the Sax-O-Mat family of movements. It was an important chapter for the brand, as the Langematik line introduced Lange’s first self-winding watches after the company’s modern revival. The movement offers a 46-hour power reserve and features Lange’s patented zero-reset mechanism, meaning the small seconds hand jumps back to zero when the crown is pulled for precise time setting. It is one of those clever details that feels very Lange: practical, beautifully engineered, and a little bit obsessive in the best possible way.
What makes this example especially attractive is the contrast. The warmth of the pink gold case against the deep black dial gives the watch a strong but elegant presence, while the oversized date at 12 o’clock adds one of Lange’s most recognizable design signatures. That date display takes inspiration from the famous five-minute clock at Dresden’s Semperoper, a detail that ties the watch beautifully back to Saxony and Lange’s own visual language.
Despite its technical depth, the ref. 308.031 remains wonderfully wearable. At 37 mm and just under 10 mm thick, it has presence without feeling too large, and the black leather strap keeps the overall look refined and quietly confident. This particular example comes with its original box and service papers, adding to its appeal as a well-kept piece from one of the most interesting periods of modern Lange production.
Taken as a whole, this is exactly the kind of A. Lange & Söhne we love to come across: elegant on the dial side, deeply impressive on the movement side, and full of small details that only become more rewarding the longer you spend with it.
