Rolex Datejust Ref. 1600 Wide-boy
Here we present a piece we have not had in our collection for quite some time: the Rolex Datejust reference 1600. The first stainless steel Datejust made its debut in 1957; prior to that, the model was available exclusively in 18k gold. What should not go unnoticed is that the ref. 1600 is considerably rarer than the more commonly seen references 1601 and 1603. Its smooth bezel sets it apart from the fluted and engine-turned bezels found on those models, giving the watch a cleaner and more understated appearance. As a result, the ref. 1600 is both visually distinctive and relatively uncommon, making it the most subtly elegant iteration of the vintage Datejust line.
This particular Datejust ref. 1600 dates back to 1975 and features a striking grey dial complemented by bold wide boy hour markers. The dial is signed with the sigma designation, indicating the use of white gold for the hour markers, a detail appreciated by collectors. The watch is paired with a leather strap, adding a refined contrast that balances formality with a sporty, relaxed character.
Inside ticks the Rolex calibre 1570, the successor to the calibre 1560. At the time, this movement was highly innovative, offering improved reliability and an approximate power reserve of 48 hours. Swiss-made movements with chronometer certification are tested by the independent non-profit organization Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres, known as COSC. The calibre 1570 meets these standards and is officially COSC certified.
If you have been considering a Datejust ref. 1601 or 1603 but are looking for something cleaner, rarer, and more understated, this ref. 1600 may be the perfect opportunity to own a truly distinctive vintage Datejust.
Take your chance and discover just how surprising simplicity can be on the wrist.

The Rolex Datejust is one of the most iconic watch designs ever made. We try not to use the term “iconic” too liberally, but it is surely justified here. Launched back in 1945 as the Ref. 4467, the design has been only marginally updated every now and then. And it has looked fresh and current ever since.
When it comes to vintage, two generations of Datejust are particularly popular; the Ref. 16xx and the later five-digit references. The 16xx models were made from the fifties until roughly 1978 and feature a beautifully dimensional pie-pan dial. Many of these came on folded jubilee bracelets and they did not yet feature a quickset date.
When the reference was updated to five digits around 1978, the pie-pan dial was replaced by a flat dial. The caliber was updated to now feature a quickset date. A decade later, in 1988, a new update saw the introduction of a sapphire crystal. For us, this is where vintage Datejust becomes modern Datejust.
Countless variations can be found. Different bezels, bracelets, dial colors, sizes and materials. The Datejust is one of the most beloved and versatile watches around. If you are looking for a one-watch-collection, that works equally well with shorts as it does with a three-piece suit, the Datejust is probably a pretty safe bet!
