Rolex Datejust Serpico Y Laino Ref. 6605

A Datejust is rarely just a Datejust, and this one proves the point in a good way.

This Rolex Datejust Ref. 6605 dates to 1957 and comes in 18k yellow gold, with the kind of warm presence only an early gold Datejust can have. The 36 mm Oyster case, fluted bezel, acrylic crystal and leather strap give it all the right vintage ingredients, but the real reason to lean in is printed on the dial.

Just below the Datejust signature sits the name Serpico Y Laino, the legendary Caracas retailer that once represented Rolex in Venezuela. It is a small line of text, but for collectors it changes the whole watch. Double-signed dials like this connect a piece not only to Rolex, but also to a very specific place, client world and moment in luxury retail history. And we have it here in Amsterdam!

The dial itself has plenty to say even before you get to the signature. Just take a look at the arrowhead markers, slim hands and date at three o’clock giving the watch a wonderfully rich late-fifties look. Its surface has aged with a soft, speckled warmth, adding texture without taking away from the clarity of the print. Paired with the brown leather strap, the whole thing feels elegant, slightly tropical and very much alive.

Inside is Rolex’s automatic calibre 1065, an early Datejust movement from the period and exactly the kind of detail that gives this watch more depth than its elegant gold case first suggests.

The Ref. 6605 sits in an important early Datejust chapter. Rolex had launched the Datejust in 1945 as the first self-winding wrist chronometer with a date window on the dial, and by the late fifties the model was becoming one of the brand’s defining designs. This example adds something rarer to that story: a Venezuelan retailer signature, gold case, arrowhead dial and all the charm of an early Oyster Perpetual Datejust.

A golden Datejust with a Serpico Y Laino dial is exactly the sort of detail-driven piece we love. Warm, rare and full of Caracas character. Available at Reestraat 3, Amsterdam.

The Rolex Datejust is one of the most iconic watch designs ever made. We try not to use the term “iconic” too liberally, but it is surely justified here. Launched back in 1945 as the Ref. 4467, the design has been only marginally updated every now and then. And it has looked fresh and current ever since.

When it comes to vintage, two generations of Datejust are particularly popular; the Ref. 16xx and the later five-digit references. The 16xx models were made from the fifties until  roughly 1978 and feature a beautifully dimensional pie-pan dial. Many of these came on folded jubilee bracelets and they did not yet feature a quickset date.

When the reference was updated to five digits around 1978, the pie-pan dial was replaced by a flat dial. The caliber was updated to now feature a quickset date. A decade later, in 1988, a new update saw the introduction of a sapphire crystal. For us, this is where vintage Datejust becomes modern Datejust.

Countless variations can be found. Different bezels, bracelets, dial colors, sizes and materials. The Datejust is one of the most beloved and versatile watches around. If you are looking for a one-watch-collection, that works equally well with shorts as it does with a three-piece suit, the Datejust is probably a pretty safe bet!
