Rolex Cellini ref.3805
The Amsterdam Watch Company collection includes a watch that bridges the gap between watchmaking and the fine arts: the Rolex Cellini reference 3805 from 1982. While Rolex is often associated with adventure and sporty robustness, the Cellini line is an ode to pure, unadulterated elegance.
The name of this watch is a deliberate choice by Rolex and carries deep symbolic meaning. It pays tribute to Benvenuto Cellini (1500–1571), one of the most celebrated goldsmiths and sculptors of the Italian Renaissance. Cellini worked for popes and the highest nobility; by bearing his name, Rolex indicates that this model is not a functional “instrument,” but a goldsmith’s masterpiece.
This specific 1982 edition embodies that mastery down to the smallest detail:
The case: The watch features a beautiful, elegant cushion-shaped case crafted from solid 18-karat yellow gold. Measuring 28 x 31 mm, it is a refined piece of jewelry that effortlessly combines modesty and luxury.
The dial: The dial, which immediately catches the eye, resembles a play of sunbeams. This effect gives the watch a luxurious and rare appearance, catching the light differently with every movement of the wrist.
The movement: In keeping with classic tradition, the reference 3805 is powered by the ultra-reliable, manually wound Caliber 1600. The daily ritual of winding it strengthens the bond between the wearer and this mechanical work of art.
The Cellini 3805 is designed for those moments when sporty specifications give way to style and etiquette. It is a “dress watch” in its purest form. In our store on Reestraat, we consider this watch a timeless testament to an era in which Rolex flexed its artistic muscles. It is a watch for the connoisseur who values history and who understands the refined language of the goldsmith, just as Benvenuto Cellini intended centuries ago.

The Cellini line is certainly not the most recognizable or famous line within the Rolex universe. But is a range full of gems and simply stunning watches.
Rolex is known for its rugged sports watches like the Submariner and Daytona. Even the dressier options such as the Datejust and Day-Date seem to approach the dress-theme from a tool-ish, ready-to-go angle. No wonder then that it took some marketing genius to deviate from this path in the 1950’s. René-Paul Jeanneret was Marketing Director at Rolex and introduced the idea of Rolex collectors.
The notion that one person might collect multiple Rolex watches was completely new. Up until then, Rolex made specialist watches for specialist professionals. Now, the brand would focus on offering different watches for different occasions. The Cellini line, named after Italian scultor and goldsmith Benvenuto Cellini, was born.
From the 1960’s onwards, the Cellini line was used as a playground for numerous different shapes and types of dress watches. From minimalist thin, Calatrava-style watches to the extremes of the King Midas.
Today, the Cellini collection is the only place within the Rolliverse where you will find hints at haute-horlogerie through features such as guilloché dials and moon-phase indicators. Precious materials and beautiful finishing techniques are omnipresent.
The Cellini was put into the public eye by Barack Obama, who was frequently spotted wearing one. A fine choice! The Cellini line is where you want to be looking if you are after a high-end Rolex that people will not instantly recognize as such!
