Rolex Cellini 18K yellow gold ref. 4112

This is a beautiful example of a classic dress watch: the Rolex Cellini. While Rolex is primarily known for robust sports watches like the Submariner or the Datejust, the Cellini line embodies pure elegance and tradition.

The case is crafted from 18-karat yellow gold. A minimalist “champagne” or gold dial with a subtle sunburst finish. The slim indices and the absence of a seconds hand or date window emphasize the sleek design.

This type of watch almost always features a manual movement. This ensures that the case remains extremely thin, allowing the watch to slip effortlessly under a shirt cuff.

The collection is named after the Italian goldsmith and sculptor of the Renaissance, Benvenuto Cellini. Rolex introduced this line to showcase craftsmanship and artistic expression.

While modern watches often become larger, this Cellini retains the classic dimensions (usually between 31mm and 33mm), perfect for an understated, formal look. The combination of the warm gold case with the dark brown lizard leather strap (as shown in the photo) gives the watch a very chic texture and contrast.

Reference number: The warranty certificate clearly shows the number 4112/8. The “4112” represents the specific model design, and the “/8” is the Rolex code for 18-karat yellow gold.

The watch is shown with the original “Warranty” document. Such paper proof significantly increases its collector’s value, as it confirms its authenticity and provenance. It is presented in an original wooden Rolex box with a velvet or suede-like lining. Cellini models were often delivered in more luxurious wooden boxes instead of the standard green leather boxes seen with sports models.

The watch is in excellent condition. The dial is bright with no visible oxidation (blemishes), and the sharp lines of the lugs suggest the case was not heavily polished in the past. It has an original 18-karat yellow gold buckle, recognizable by the characteristic Rolex crown that sits atop the buckle.

The Cellini line is certainly not the most recognizable or famous line within the Rolex universe. But is a range full of gems and simply stunning watches.

Rolex is known for its rugged sports watches like the Submariner and Daytona. Even the dressier options such as the Datejust and Day-Date seem to approach the dress-theme from a tool-ish, ready-to-go angle. No wonder then that it took some marketing genius to deviate from this path in the 1950’s. René-Paul Jeanneret was Marketing Director at Rolex and introduced the idea of Rolex collectors.

The notion that one person might collect multiple Rolex watches was completely new. Up until then, Rolex made specialist watches for specialist professionals. Now, the brand would focus on offering different watches for different occasions. The Cellini line, named after Italian scultor and goldsmith Benvenuto Cellini, was born.

From the 1960’s onwards, the Cellini line was used as a playground for numerous different shapes and types of dress watches. From minimalist thin, Calatrava-style watches to the extremes of the King Midas.

Today, the Cellini collection is the only place within the Rolliverse where you will find hints at haute-horlogerie through features such as guilloché dials and moon-phase indicators. Precious materials and beautiful finishing techniques are omnipresent.

The Cellini was put into the public eye by Barack Obama, who was frequently spotted wearing one. A fine choice! The Cellini line is where you want to be looking if you are after a high-end Rolex that people will not instantly recognize as such!
