Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 2428
This is a magnificent piece of watchmaking history. Here’s a compelling story for this icon:
The embodiment of watchmaking: Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 2428 (1948).
Some watches tell the time, others tell a story. This Patek Philippe Calatrava from 1948 undeniably belongs to the latter category. In an era we now call the “Golden Age” of watchmaking, Patek Philippe created with the reference 2428 an object that transcends fleeting fashion.
What immediately stands out about this Ref. 2428 is the bold, almost architectural case. While many dress watches of the time opted for understated lines, this model commands respect with its oversized, straight lugs. This characteristic shape gives the watch a powerful presence on the wrist, without losing the typical Calatrava understated style. The warm glow of the 18-karat rose gold creates a stunning contrast with the silver-colored dial. Details like the raised gold baton indices and the floating seconds subdial demonstrate a level of finishing that today’s modern man can only dream of.
With its 32mm case, this watch is the ultimate symbol of understatement. It’s a piece of jewelry for the modern man who understands that true class doesn’t shout, it whispers.Year of manufacture: 1948 – A historic year when craftsmanship was still the only standard. Material: Solid 18k rose gold, a rare and sought-after variety.Style: The perfect balance of vintage charm and timeless elegance.
Imagine what this watch has seen in nearly eighty years. What dinners has it attended? What contracts have been signed under it? This isn’t simply a timekeeping instrument; it’s an heirloom waiting for a new chapter.
Come experience its refinement for yourself at Amsterdam Watch Company. Let yourself be enchanted by the history and unmistakable allure of a Patek Philippe that has not only withstood the test of time, but has overcome it.

In 1932, the year in which brothers Charles and Jean Stern acquired Patek Philippe, the name of the manufacture’s prestigious symbol, the Calatrava cross, was given to a watch collection. The first true ‘family’ of watches Patek Philippe had created, the Calatrava quickly became a classic and is still regarded today as the brand’s most iconic collection.
The design was inspired by the Bauhaus movement, a German school of Arts based on the belief that ‘less is more’ and ‘form follows function’. Since the purpose of a watch is to tell the time, these principles discouraged any embellishments which could detract from the time-telling.
The result was a watch that was at once beautiful and practical. Presented in a round case with a flat bezel and simple dial with baton indices, the art of omission in the debut model Ref. 96, came to characterize the Calatrava’s understated, yet timeless style.
The design has become a template for other brands. A simple, minimalist dress watch with a sub-dial for the seconds at six o’clock, is often referred to as a Calatrava watch, regardless of the brand. So while Patek did it first, it is perfectly reasonable to stumble upon a JLC Calatrava or a Vacheron Constantin Calatrava.
