Patek Philippe blue dial ladies box and papers
This model features a cushion-shaped case in 18-karat yellow gold. What makes this piece special is the texture of the bezel, which flows seamlessly into the bracelet. The integrated gold mesh bracelet (also known as Milanese) is a work of art in itself. Such bracelets were often hand-woven by specialized goldsmiths like Jean-Pierre Ecoffey.
The beautiful blue dial features exquisite, unique Roman numerals. Traditionally, watches feature numerals at all hours, or at the four cardinal points (XII, III, VI, IX). However, this watch features an asymmetrical or minimalistic layout:
The XII (12) is at the top.
The III (3) is on the right.
The VI (6) is at the bottom.
The IX (9) is on the left. While these are the standard highlights, the design here is unique because the numerals are very large and thickly applied (“chunky” markers), which creates a beautiful contrast with the sleek, deep blue dial. The numerals aren’t simply printed, but appear to be applied (applied) gold. This adds depth to the dial. The style is sleek and sans-serif, which fits the modernist aesthetic of the 1970s, where texture (such as the “bark finish” on the case and bracelet) was key.
At the bottom of the dial, you’ll see the text σ SWISS σ. The Greek letter sigma indicates that the dial and/or the indices (i.e., the numerals) are made of solid gold. This was a quality mark of the “Association pour la Promotion de l’Industrie de l’Oeil” (APRIOR) that was primarily used in the 1970s.

All the way back in 1839, Franciszek Czapek and Antoni Patek founded Patek, Czapek & Cie. in Geneva. The two Polish watchmakers manufactured pocket watches until an argument drove them apart in 1845. Patek teamed up with French watchmaker Adrien Philippe and in 1851, Patek, Philippe & Cie. was officially registered and the story of arguably the finest of watch manufacturers was truly underway.
The company would amass an impressive array of firsts and records. Among which the first perpetual calendar pocket watch, first split-second chronograph wristwatch, first perpetual calendar wristwatch and for twenty-seven years they held the record for most complicated watch movement: 33 complications.
Yes, we have entered the realm of haute horology.
The house registered its Calatrava cross logo in 1887. The Calatrava would later become one of the brand’s celebrated collections and even a design template for other brands.
Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet and Vacheron Constantin form what is lovingly referred to as the Holy trinity of watchmaking. Three houses that specialized in haute horology, pushing the boundaries of mechanical watchmaking, decoration and finishing techniques.
Much like Rolex and Omega rule the everyday-watch category, the Holy trinity rules haute horology. A sentiment reflected in Patek’s motto since 1996: You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely look after it for the next generation.
