Patek Philippe Tegolino ref.425
In the prestigious AWCo collection on Amsterdam’s Reestraat, there’s a watch that makes collectors’ hearts beat faster: the Patek Philippe “Tegolino” Reference 425 from 1947. This is more than just a timepiece; it’s an architectural masterpiece from a time when watches were still the ultimate expression of art and technology.
The Reference 425, produced between 1934 and 1960, is a textbook example of the Art Deco style. Crafted from rich 18-karat yellow gold, the case has a striking rectangular shape with faceted edges. Most striking, however, is the profile: the case and crystal are subtly curved, allowing the watch to conform beautifully to the wrist. It’s a design that exudes both strength and refinement, a rare combination typical of Patek Philippe’s golden age.
Why “Tegolino”?
Collectors worldwide know this model by its charming Italian nickname: the Tegolino. This name, which means “little tile,” is a nod to the sleek, geometric shape of the case. But there’s more: in Italy, the Tegolino is also a famous rectangular cake. The resemblance is so striking that the name has become inextricably linked to this specific reference number. It gives this serious piece of Haute Horlogerie an almost poetic and human character.
This particular piece dates from 1947, the period immediately following World War II when the world yearned for beauty and restoration. The watch comes with an original gold buckle, which greatly enhances its authenticity and collector’s value. For the man who wears this watch, it demonstrates a keen eye for historical detail and an appreciation for a design philosophy that has effortlessly stood the test of time.
The Patek Philippe Tegolino ref. 425 is more than a timekeeper; it is a monument of design. At AWCo, you have the opportunity to become the new custodian of this “golden tile,” a piece of history as sweet and unforgettable as its name suggests. For the man who wants to wear this piece of history with honor and joy.

All the way back in 1839, Franciszek Czapek and Antoni Patek founded Patek, Czapek & Cie. in Geneva. The two Polish watchmakers manufactured pocket watches until an argument drove them apart in 1845. Patek teamed up with French watchmaker Adrien Philippe and in 1851, Patek, Philippe & Cie. was officially registered and the story of arguably the finest of watch manufacturers was truly underway.
The company would amass an impressive array of firsts and records. Among which the first perpetual calendar pocket watch, first split-second chronograph wristwatch, first perpetual calendar wristwatch and for twenty-seven years they held the record for most complicated watch movement: 33 complications.
Yes, we have entered the realm of haute horology.
The house registered its Calatrava cross logo in 1887. The Calatrava would later become one of the brand’s celebrated collections and even a design template for other brands.
Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet and Vacheron Constantin form what is lovingly referred to as the Holy trinity of watchmaking. Three houses that specialized in haute horology, pushing the boundaries of mechanical watchmaking, decoration and finishing techniques.
Much like Rolex and Omega rule the everyday-watch category, the Holy trinity rules haute horology. A sentiment reflected in Patek’s motto since 1996: You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely look after it for the next generation.
