Universal Genève Chronograph Ref.12445 B+P

Universal Genève built its reputation on chronographs long before sports watches became luxury shorthand. This Ref. 12445 comes from that earlier, more tailored chapter: precious metal, elegant proportions and a dial packed with purpose without looking overdone.

Dating to circa 1952, the watch pairs a warm pink-gold case with a softly aged silver dial. Applied Arabic numerals at twelve and six anchor the design, joined by small dot markers and thin gold hands. Two recessed registers create the classical symmetry: running seconds at nine and a 45-minute chronograph counter at three.

The blue details are particularly good. Blued register hands and a matching central chronograph hand bring colour to the otherwise warm palette, while the outer tachymeter scale adds a fine technical edge.

Rectangular pushers, a broad winding crown and sharply drawn lugs give the case more character from the side. The acrylic crystal adds the right softness, while the brown leather strap keeps the gold from feeling overly formal.

This two-register format is generally known as the Uni-Compax, the more restrained sibling within Universal Genève’s celebrated chronograph family. This would later become inseparable from the racing-paddock style of Nina Rindt, but this example belongs to the generation before chronographs became overtly sporty: closer to fine tailoring than racing gear. Universal Genève’s later Compax association with Rindt is part of the broader cultural life that made the brand’s vintage chronographs so collectible today.

A full set mid-century Universal Genève chronograph with gold warmth, blue dial accents and the balanced simplicity of a proper two-register layout. Technical underneath, remarkably elegant on the wrist, and very much from the brand’s golden age. Available at Reestraat 3, Amsterdam.
