Rolex Explorer Mk3 Ref.1016 B+P

The Explorer’s story traces back to the early 1950s with two pioneering Bubbleback models, references 6098 and 6150, equipped with the calibre A296. These watches were favored by adventurers and mountaineers, but they didn’t yet carry the Explorer name or the signature Arabic 3-6-9 dial. In 1953, Rolex introduced references 6298 and 6350, which featured the now-iconic “Explorer” dial, with Mercedes hands added shortly thereafter. By 1959, the legendary 1016 reference made its debut, establishing a design that would remain largely consistent for decades. Its robust construction and timeless design have made it one of the most sought-after sports models among collectors.

Here we present a beautiful example from 1975. It retains the classic 36 mm size and a clean, highly legible dial. This is a so called Mk 3 dial, where the tritium has aged to a stunning warm yellow, creating an amazing contrast against the black dial a look unique to vintage Explorers and early Mk 3 Dials.

What makes this watch even more special is that it comes as a full set, including box and papers. The hands feature a matching tritium patina, with the exception of the lollipop seconds hand, which has had its lume replaced.

We love the 1016, especially when it has this stunning warm tritium.
