Rolex Date black dial. Ref. 1500

This Oyster Perpetual Date Ref. 1500 dates to 1976 and measures 34 mm, but the dark dial gives it a sharper presence than the dimensions might suggest. It is still restrained, still very much an everyday Rolex, only with a little more contrast than the silver and champagne versions usually associated with the reference.

Applied baton markers and slim hands sit neatly against the black surface, with the date enlarged beneath the Cyclops at three o’clock. There is no decorative pattern or unnecessary complication competing for attention. The appeal comes from the clarity of the layout and the way the white-metal details cut through the dial.

A smooth polished bezel keeps the case clean, while the acrylic crystal adds the softer profile that belongs to a four-digit Rolex. The steel Oyster bracelet continues the straightforward character of the watch: brushed, practical and considerably less formal than the same reference would feel on leather.

The Ref. 1500 occupies an appealing place within the vintage Rolex catalogue. Its 34 mm Oyster case is more discreet than a Datejust, but it retains the date, Cyclops and chronometer-certified dial text that make it instantly familiar. Rolex introduced the date window at three o’clock on the Datejust in 1945, with the Cyclops later becoming one of the brand’s most recognisable functional details.
