Patek Philippe Calatrava 18k WG Ref. 7119 + SP

This Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 7119 is proof that small, quiet watches can still have plenty to say. Made in 18k white gold and dating to 2013, it has that crisp Calatrava elegance, but with a little extra ‘Clous de Paris’ texture around the edges.

The first thing that gives it away is the bezel. It is a very Patek kind of decoration: precise, restrained and best appreciated up close.

The dial keeps things classic. Black Roman numerals, slim black hands and a small seconds display at six o’clock give the watch a lovely sense of balance. No date, no unnecessary complication, no loud gesture. Just a clean white dial doing exactly what a Calatrava dial should do.

Inside is Patek Philippe’s hand-wound calibre 215 PS, a slim movement with small seconds that fits the refined character of this watch perfectly. Winding it by hand feels very much part of the charm, especially in a Calatrava this elegant.

From the side, the case stays especially slim on the wrist, with the sapphire crystal keeping everything crisp and clear. The bright blue leather strap gives the watch a fresh, slightly playful twist, especially against the cool white gold case. Finished with its original white gold buckle, it feels refined, but not too serious about it.

The Calatrava has been Patek Philippe’s great exercise in restraint since 1932. The 7119 carries that idea in a smaller, more delicate form: traditional Roman numerals, small seconds, a hand-wound movement and that lovely Clous de Paris bezel giving the whole thing a quiet extra touch.

A white gold Calatrava with what is also called a hobnail bezel, small seconds and just the right touch of colour on the wrist. Elegant, precise, exactly what you’d expect from Patek. Paired with a service pouch and service papers, this piece comes nice and complete. Come see it for yourself at Reestraat 3, Amsterdam.

In 1932, the year in which brothers Charles and Jean Stern acquired Patek Philippe, the name of the manufacture’s prestigious symbol, the Calatrava cross, was given to a watch collection. The first true ‘family’ of watches Patek Philippe had created, the Calatrava quickly became a classic and is still regarded today as the brand’s most iconic collection.

The design was inspired by the Bauhaus movement, a German school of Arts based on the belief that ‘less is more’ and ‘form follows function’. Since the purpose of a watch is to tell the time, these principles discouraged any embellishments which could detract from the time-telling.

The result was a watch that was at once beautiful and practical. Presented in a round case with a flat bezel and simple dial with baton indices, the art of omission in the debut model Ref. 96, came to characterize the Calatrava’s understated, yet timeless style.

The design has become a template for other brands. A simple, minimalist dress watch with a sub-dial for the seconds at six o’clock, is often referred to as a Calatrava watch, regardless of the brand. So while Patek did it first, it is perfectly reasonable to stumble upon a JLC Calatrava or a Vacheron Constantin Calatrava.
