Patek Philippe Aquanaut Ref. 5168G-010 B+P
Here, at AWCO, we have always had a soft spot for a good Aquanaut, and this one gets just about everything right. The Patek Philippe Aquanaut reference 5168G-010 represents the bolder and more contemporary side of the Aquanaut line, while still preserving all the balance and characteristics that make the model so unmistakably Patek Philippe. With its 42.2 mm white gold case, rounded octagonal bezel, and integrated khaki green strap, it has real presence on the wrist, yet never feels heavy-handed.
What really sets this piece apart is the colour. Introduced in 2019, the khaki green dial and matching strap gave the white gold Aquanaut “Jumbo” a completely different mood from its blue brother. It feels slightly more casual, a touch more adventurous, and somehow even more modern, without losing that what keeps the Aquanaut so elegant. The embossed Aquanaut pattern, white gold applied numerals, and matching khaki strap all work together in a way that just feels complete. It is one of those watches where the full design simply clicks.
Since the Aquanaut collection’s debut in 1997 as the younger and sportier counterpart to the Nautilus, the Aquanaut has grown into something with a character entirely of its own. Where the Nautilus can feel a little more formal, the Aquanaut has always had a more relaxed and contemporary spirit. In this larger white gold case, that character comes through especially well. The watch feels refined, but never too polished to wear casually.
Despite its size, the proportions remain impressively slim at just 8.25 mm thick, and that goes a long way in how pleasantly this watch wears. The case alternates between satin-brushed and polished finishes, while the integrated strap keeps the overall feel light, comfortable, and very natural on the wrist. Inside beats Patek Philippe’s self-winding time-and-date movement, visible through the skeleton-saphire caseback, adding the mechanical beauty one hopes to find behind a design this strong.
This ref. 5168G-010 offers a complete version of the Aquanaut idea: precious metal, modern proportions, a highly successful colourway, and that slightly relaxed confidence that has made the Aquanaut such a compelling part of the Patek Philippe catalogue. This example dates to circa 2020 and comes complete with its original box and papers, exactly as you would hope to find it.

When the Patek Philippe Nautilus was launched in 1976, it became a massive hit for the brand. Some twenty years later, the Nautilus was well-established and Patek needed something fresh for a younger audience. They took a lot of Nautilus DNA, shrunk it to 35,6mm, ditched the integrated steel bracelet for a rubber strap and the new kid on the block was born: the Patek Philippe Aquanaut.
This first Aquanaut was the Ref. 5060A, featuring an instantly recognizable dial with Arabic numerals and a rather particular pattern. It would earn the nickname grenade dial, for its blocked structure that would be echoed on the rubber strap.
Speaking of the strap, rubber might not be the obvious choice for a high-brow manufacture like Patek. This is not just any rubber strap though. It is made up of over twenty different materials and completely impervious to UV radiation and salt water.
A 34mm quartz version Ref. 5064 A-001 would be launched a year after the Ref. 5060A. An even smaller version in 29,5mm’s would be added as Ref. 4960 A-010.
Then, in 1998, Patek launched the Ref. 5065-A. A beefier 38mm version with an automatic caliber on display through the sapphire case back. The original Ref. 5060 would also be upgraded to a display case back in Ref. 5066.
Later versions would see the dial pattern reduced to subtle lines rather than blocks with deep ridges in between. A new rubber strap would be integrated with the case a little more. As with the previous Aquanauts, steel and gold variants would be introduced as well as several complications.
The Aquanaut was not the instant hit that the Nautilus was. They have picked up pace though. Today, the Patek Aquanaut is another hard-to-get, highly sought-after sports watch from one of the most prestigious houses. A watch with a unique and very cool aesthetic.
