Omega Suveran 2 tone dial Ref. 2400-6

Here we have a watch with an interesting history. This is exactly why we love vintage watches. It is not only the design that speaks to us, but also an interesting part of history a watch with a story.

The so-called “Reverse Tax”: During WWII, Sweden maintained its neutrality but faced heavy defense costs. The Swedish government made an agreement with Omega to produce a watch that could be sold through Swedish watchmakers, with the profits contributing to Sweden’s defense budget. This watch was the Suverän, named after Sweden’s status as a sovereign and neutral nation during the Second World War.

The Swedish government purchased these durable watches from Omega in Switzerland and sold them at a premium to the Swedish public. The story also goes that these watches became highly valued for their ruggedness. They were so widely circulated and trusted that, according to collector lore, they even earned the nickname “Cigarette Watch,” as Swedish soldiers would sometimes trade them for packs of cigarettes.

It is always fascinating how these timepieces find themselves connected to moments in history or were created because they were needed during those times.

Here we present a very complete Omega Suverän, the classic reference 2400-6, fitted with the correct and matching 30T2 manual-wind calibre. While there is a standard military-style variant with luminous blocky Arabic numerals, these watches were released with a variety of dial configurations, including grey, black, and the highly coveted “bullseye” or sector dials.

This example features a classic black and silver dial that remains in very good condition, of course fitted with a sub-seconds counter and the famous Arabic numerals. On the case back of these Omega watches, we often find the model name “Suverän” engraved, which is still very clear on our piece.

To make this story even more complete and special, the Swedish name Rune is engraved inside the watch, together with the date 1946. This was probably the day the watch was received, perhaps as a birthday gift or even to mark the end of one of the darkest periods in our world’s history.

Nevertheless, this timepiece remains an exceptional vintage piece that truly brings you back in time, while still offering a timeless design.

Omega was founded in La chaux-de-fonds by Louis Brandt in 1848, although the company would not be named Omega until 1903. It is one of the most successful Swiss watch houses, both in terms of sales and historical significance.

Louis Brandt was already rather innovative before his Omega days. He developed the very first minute-repeater wristwatch with Audemars Piguet in 1892. Although Brandt died in 1903, Omega would not lose its innovative nature. Among its biggest accomplishments are the manufacture of the first tourbillon wristwatch movement in 1947 and the first large-scale commercial implementation of George Daniels’ co-axial escapement in 1999.

The biggest highlight in Omega’s history is undoubtedly the moon landing in 1969. Both Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin wore Omega Speedmasters on the lunar surface. But there is so much more to this Swiss powerhouse. They launched the very first dive watch with the Omega Marine, all the way back in 1932. That is some twenty years before the Blancpain Fifty-Fathoms and Rolex Submariner would redefine the category.

Omega has no shortage of hit collections. From the Speedmaster to the Seamaster and from the Constellation to the De Ville, with tons and tons of variations within all of those lines. You may opt for a yellow gold pie-pan Constellation or for a chunky Ploprof. There is something for everyone.

And that is before we go into Omega’s military history, including the Dirty dozen MOD-issued field watch. And we cannot forget James Bond, with his tricked out Seamasters since 1995’s Goldeneye.
