In 1973, Cartier introduced the Louis Cartier Collection: a series of twelve watches that brought Cartier’s distinctive design language into a new era of production. Rather than focusing on conventional watchmaking forms, Cartier used the collection to explore something that had always been at the heart of the maison: shape.

Cartier has long been celebrated first and foremost as a jeweller, but its history in watchmaking is equally fascinating. From the Santos-Dumont  one of the earliest purpose-designed wristwatches for men  to the Tank and the many unusual forms that followed, Cartier has often distinguished itself through design rather than through the pursuit of in-house movements alone.

And that is precisely what makes these watches so compelling.

Some watches are bought for their technical complexity. Others are worn simply because of the beauty of their proportions, their lines, and the way they look on the wrist. Vintage Cartier belongs very much to the latter category.

The Vendôme was one of the twelve original models of the Louis Cartier Collection. Produced in different sizes, it offered the characteristic Cartier aesthetic in a round case, providing an interesting alternative to the more familiar Tank and Santos-Dumont.

The watch we are presenting here is the small 26 mm Ref. 67080, a ladies’ model from the 1970s. Its 18-karat gold case houses a manually wound ETA 2412 movement, and it features the unmistakable Cartier combination of Roman numerals and a refined Paris-signed dial.

The round case gives the Vendôme a character of its own. It is unmistakably Cartier, yet perhaps a little less obvious than the Tank or Santos-Dumont. There is an elegance in its restraint  a watch that does not need an immediately recognisable silhouette to make its presence felt.

For us, this is where the beauty of vintage Cartier lies: in the diversity of its designs. The maison was never limited to one single shape, and the Louis Cartier Collection is a wonderful expression of that philosophy.

We have always believed that collecting watches does not have to mean following the latest trends. Sometimes, the most interesting choice is the one that stands slightly apart from them.
