In 2020, we released the first Squale x AWCO Special  a project built around a remarkable collection of New Old Stock Blancpain cases, signed “Rayville SA” on the inside of the caseback. The response was overwhelming: the entire edition sold out on the very same day.

Since then, our long-standing relationship with Squale has continued to grow. When Squale approached us with the news that they had a final batch of 60 original Rayville SA Blancpain Bathyscaphe cases, we knew immediately that we wanted to bring them back to life.

After our first collaboration, we went back to the drawing board. This time, we looked to one of the most important chapters in Blancpain’s dive-watch history for inspiration: the Fifty Fathoms Mil-Spec.

The result is the AWCO Squale Speciale Milbino.

Inspired by the Mil-Spec

The Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Mil-Spec is one of the defining watches of the early professional diving era. Among its most distinctive features is the water-resistance indicator at 6 o’clock, an ingenious solution that gave the wearer a visual warning if moisture entered the case.

The Milbino takes inspiration from this iconic design. Our dial features a moisture indicator at 6 o’clock, bringing this fascinating piece of early dive-watch history back to life.

The original Mil-Spec indicator was a passive visual sensor. Under dry conditions, the indicator remained light in colour, while exposure to moisture caused the sensitive section to change colour, signalling that the watch’s water resistance may have been compromised.

We wanted to preserve that distinctive connection to the history of professional diving while creating a watch that is unmistakably our own. The result is the Milbino: a vintage-inspired Squale with a genuine moisture indicator, housed in an original Blancpain Bathyscaphe case signed “Rayville SA.”

The final 60

At the heart of the AWCO Squale Speciale Milbino is the proven ETA 2671 automatic movement, the same movement used in our previous Squale x AWCO Special. It brings modern mechanical reliability to a watch built around an extraordinary vintage foundation.The cases are the real starting point of the project. These are original New Old Stock Blancpain Bathyscaphe cases, signed “Rayville SA”, produced during the pioneering era of dive-watch development and preserved unused for decades.

That makes the Milbino something rather unusual: a modern Squale watch built around an authentic vintage Blancpain case, combining contemporary mechanical reliability with a genuine piece of dive-watch history.

After the success of our 2020 edition, we knew that an opportunity like this was unlikely to come around again. When we learned that only 60 of these original cases remained available, we wanted to make their final chapter count.

The AWCO Squale Speciale Milbino is our tribute to that history  inspired by the legendary Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Mil-Spec, brought to life by Squale, and built around one of the last surviving New Old Stock Blancpain Bathyscaphe cases signed “Rayville SA.”
