Rolex Sea-Dweller ref.1665 B+P

The Rolex Sea-Dweller reference 1665 is one of those watches that speaks directly to the more uncompromising side of Rolex tool-watch history. Developed in the late 1960s in collaboration with COMEX and built on the foundations of the Submariner, the Sea-Dweller was created for professional saturation diving, with a helium escape valve and a water resistance of 610 metres. In that sense, the ref. 1665 has always stood slightly apart: less familiar than the Submariner, perhaps, but in many ways even more purpose-driven.

This particular example dates to 1981 and belongs to the later period of 1665 production, often appreciated for its so-called Great White dial. By this point, the red text of the earlier Double Red versions had disappeared, leaving behind a cleaner, more understated look that suits the Sea-Dweller especially well. The 40 mm steel case remains unpolished, and together with the acrylic crystal, matte black dial, and steel bracelet, it carries exactly the kind of honest tool-watch presence collectors tend to hope for in a vintage Sea-Dweller.

Inside beats Rolex’s automatic calibre 1575, the movement most closely associated with the ref. 1665 throughout its production. What continues to make this reference so appealing is the balance it offers: all the ruggedness and character of vintage Rolex dive watches, but with a personality entirely its own. It has the familiar proportions of a classic sports Rolex, yet feels a little more serious, a little more niche, and all the more interesting because of it.

This example is accompanied by its original box and papers and even retains its original anchor with green logo, details that add greatly to its appeal as a complete and well-preserved set from an important chapter in Rolex diving history. Taken as a whole, this is exactly the kind of Sea-Dweller that reminds you why the reference has become so respected: functional, purposeful, and full of character.

The Sea-Dweller is a more hardcore version of the Submariner. Quite literally, as it was developed with French marine engineering company Comex on the Submariner platform, to withstand greater depths. The Ref. 5514 Submariner formed the starting point. A tougher case back and a helium escape valve were added, upping the water resistance to 2000 feet or 610 meters. The Sea-Dweller Ref. 1665 was born in 1967.

A date complication was required, because many professional dives and decompression sessions would last days or even weeks. The helium escape valve prevented the crystal from popping out when saturation diving. An issue the Submariner would never run into during more casual SCUBA dives.

The Ref. 1665 came in several different dial variants, throughout its 16 years in production. From Double red Sea-Dwellers to Great whites and several subtle variations with differing degrees of rarity within those variants. A particularly legendary version is the Single red, of which only 12 are known to exist.

The Rolex Sea-Dweller was updated to the Ref. 16660 in 1978. The tritium dial was replaced by a LumiNova version in 1998/99. Several other variations exist within this reference. Later updates, among which the Deepsea and the James Cameron, saw an increase in size and a ceramic bezel, among other updates.

The Sea-Dweller is arguably the most toolish of all Rolex models. Where the Submariner has become a cross-over between diving and casual wear, the Sea-Dweller always remained a tool for exploring the bottom of the ocean. While quite similar to the Sub in appearance, it does convey a lot of that feeling when you handle it. So if you are of the adventurous inclination, the Sea-Dweller might just suit you perfectly. And do not worry if you put a scratch on it. Looks even better!
