Rolex Datejust 31 mm Ref. 6824
The Rolex Datejust 6824: An alchemy of steel and sunlight.
In the world of watchmaking, there are icons, and then there’s the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust. But the piece we have before us, a Reference 6824 from 1982, tells a story that goes far beyond simply telling the time. It’s a story of “beautiful flaws,” character, and the perfect size.
While most classic Datejust models opt for the traditional men’s or small women’s size, the Ref. 6824, with its 31 mm case, treads the golden mean. In 1982, this model was called the “Mid-size,” but today, many consider it the “ideal size.” It offers the perfect balance: the elegance of a piece of jewelry combined with the robustness of the legendary Oyster case.
Anyone who looks at the details immediately sees why this watch is so beloved. The last digit in the reference number, the “4,” reveals its character: the smooth bezel. While many Rolexes boast a fluted gold bezel, this model opts for a sleek, polished steel bezel. This gives the watch a modern and understated look, which flows seamlessly into the sporty Oyster bracelet with its characteristic three flat links.
The heart of this watch, however, is the dial, and that’s where something magical happens. This watch features a rare Tropical Dial. In the 1970s and 1980s, Rolex used paints that, unknowingly, were sensitive to UV light. Decades of sunlight and heat have transformed the original champagne color.
What began as a manufacturing error is now a collector’s dream: the dial has developed a warm, orange glow reminiscent of a sunset. Because Rolex later adjusted the paint formula, these “tropical” dials are extremely rare. They are the ultimate proof that this watch has truly “lived”; Each piece has a unique character that no machine can replicate.
Beneath the vintage plexiglass, which gives the dial a soft, warm glow, ticks the reliable Rolex Caliber 2030. This is a “Perpetual” movement: a technical feat that winds itself through the natural movement of the wrist. At the bottom of the dial is the inscription “T SWISS T,” a tribute to the days when tritium was still used to make the hands and indices glow in the dark.
The Rolex Datejust 6824 from 1982 is more than a watch from a catalog. It is a fusion of the robustness of steel, the precision of the caliber 2030, and the vagaries of nature that gave the dial its unique color. For the lover of vintage masterpieces, such as those found at Amsterdam Watch Company, this is not just a piece of jewelry, but a piece of history on the wrist.

The Rolex Datejust is one of the most iconic watch designs ever made. We try not to use the term “iconic” too liberally, but it is surely justified here. Launched back in 1945 as the Ref. 4467, the design has been only marginally updated every now and then. And it has looked fresh and current ever since.
When it comes to vintage, two generations of Datejust are particularly popular; the Ref. 16xx and the later five-digit references. The 16xx models were made from the fifties until roughly 1978 and feature a beautifully dimensional pie-pan dial. Many of these came on folded jubilee bracelets and they did not yet feature a quickset date.
When the reference was updated to five digits around 1978, the pie-pan dial was replaced by a flat dial. The caliber was updated to now feature a quickset date. A decade later, in 1988, a new update saw the introduction of a sapphire crystal. For us, this is where vintage Datejust becomes modern Datejust.
Countless variations can be found. Different bezels, bracelets, dial colors, sizes and materials. The Datejust is one of the most beloved and versatile watches around. If you are looking for a one-watch-collection, that works equally well with shorts as it does with a three-piece suit, the Datejust is probably a pretty safe bet!
