Rolex Date ref.1500 Shantung dial
Here we present the Rolex Date reference 1500 and it is one of those watches that quietly reminds you how strong Rolex can be in a smaller and more understated format. Often living a little in the shadow of the Datejust, the Date offers much of the same charm and functionality, but in a 34 mm case that feels especially balanced on the wrist. This particular example dates to circa 1972 and is crafted in 18k yellow gold, giving the watch a warmer and more refined character while preserving the everyday versatility that has long defined the Rolex Date.
What makes this piece especially appealing is its blue Shantung dial. Also referred to by collectors as a mosaic or brick dial, this rare textured finish is known for its woven, silk-like appearance, giving the dial far more depth and personality than a standard finish. In blue, the effect becomes even more attractive, as the surface shifts subtly in tone depending on the light.
The 34 mm yellow gold Oyster case, acrylic crystal, and leather strap keep the overall look elegant and restrained, while the aftermarket 18k gold buckle ties in naturally with the warmth of the case. The ref. 1500 is generally associated with Rolex’s automatic Date movements of the period, and references from this family are appreciated today for exactly that balance between classic vintage proportions and easy day-to-day wear.
Taken as a whole, this is not simply a classic Rolex Date, but a particularly expressive one. The combination of yellow gold, compact proportions, and the uncommon blue Shantung dial gives it a personality that feels both refined and a little unexpected. Visit us at Reetraat 9 in Amsterdam to feel its look on your wrist because it is exactly the kind of vintage Rolex that becomes more interesting the longer you look at it.

The Rolex Date line is perhaps a bit of a hidden gem. Overlooked by the male audience when fashion dictated watches should be big in the early 2000s. Now that the trends are leaning towards smaller again, they are being rediscovered as a pretty great size for both men and women. Of course, there are smaller sizes available as well, but the 34mm is the most common.
Rolex launched the 36mm Datejust and the 34mm Air King in 1945. About a decade later, the Date was added as a sort of in-between model. The same 34mm Oyster case as the Air King, but with the addition of a date and cyclops like the Datejust.
So what you have here is a watch that is technically the same as a Datejust, but since its smaller size scares off some of the potential buyers, it is much more affordable. So if you are confident wearing a subtle size like this (if you are not, come and try one on. You will be converted) this is a real sweet spot in the vintage Rolex market!
The Date comes in tons of variations. From rare early models with gilt dials and dagger hands, to super minimalist silver dial, oyster bracelet examples. You can have your pick of materials, colors and bracelets. There is surely a version that will speak to you!
