Rolex Date florentine sigma dial ref. 1502

Here we present a very charming Rolex Date reference 1502, a model that has quietly become a collectors’ favourite now that tastes are slowly moving back towards rather elegant, more wearable proportions. Rolex positioned the Date as the in-between sibling of the Datejust and the Air-King, sharing the classic Oyster case while adding the Cyclops date display.

Dated to circa 1966, this example comes in 18k yellow gold with a beautifully balanced 34 mm case, fitted with an acrylic crystal and a clean silver dial. The real joy here is in the details: the Florentine finish adds a refined, cross-hatched texture that catches the light in a soft, almost fabric-like way, giving the watch a distinctly vintage-luxury character.

What makes this watch even better, it features a sigma dial. Those small sigma markings were used to signal that the applied details on the dial, typically the hour markers and often the hands, are made of gold. It is a subtle detail, but once you know what it means, you start looking for it on every great vintage Rolex dial.

Inside ticks the automatic Cal. 1565, a classic Rolex movement from the era, known for its robustness and an approximate 42 to 44-hour power reserve. This watch is offered on a leather strap with an 18k gold buckle, and comes as watch only.

If you are after a vintage Rolex that feels discreet on the wrist yet rich in detail, this is a wonderful choice. We warmly invite you to try it on in-store at Reestraat 3, Amsterdam.

The Rolex Date line is perhaps a bit of a hidden gem. Overlooked by the male audience when fashion dictated watches should be big in the early 2000s. Now that the trends are leaning towards smaller again, they are being rediscovered as a pretty great size for both men and women. Of course, there are smaller sizes available as well, but the 34mm is the most common.

Rolex launched the 36mm Datejust and the 34mm Air King in 1945. About a decade later, the Date was added as a sort of in-between model. The same 34mm Oyster case as the Air King, but with the addition of a date and cyclops like the Datejust.

So what you have here is a watch that is technically the same as a Datejust, but since its smaller size scares off some of the potential buyers, it is much more affordable. So if you are confident wearing a subtle size like this (if you are not, come and try one on. You will be converted) this is a real sweet spot in the vintage Rolex market!

The Date comes in tons of variations. From rare early models with gilt dials and dagger hands, to super minimalist silver dial, oyster bracelet examples. You can have your pick of materials, colors and bracelets. There is surely a version that will speak to you!
