Rolex Cellini vignette 18K
The Amsterdam Watch Company collection features a masterpiece that reveals the artistic soul of watchmaking: the Rolex Cellini. While Rolex became world-famous with robust “tool watches,” the Cellini line represents the brand’s most classic and refined side.
The name of this collection is no coincidence. In the 1960s and 1970s, Rolex director René-Paul Jeanneret wanted to showcase Rolex’s artistic side and chose a name synonymous with mastery: Benvenuto Cellini (1500–1571). This celebrated Italian goldsmith and sculptor from the Renaissance created exquisite works for popes and kings. By borrowing his name, Rolex sent a clear message: this watch is not a tool for diving or flying, but a masterpiece of goldsmithing where elegance takes precedence over function. This particular example is a beautiful testament to that philosophy:
The case: An elegant, oval case crafted from solid 18-karat yellow gold, measuring a modest 33 x 27 mm. The bezel features a delicate engraving that subtly serves as an hour marker, a detail that emphasizes the case’s geometric beauty.
The “Vignette” dial: The absolute showpiece is the rare dial. It features a captivating color gradient, from warm amber yellow at the heart to deep dark brown at the edges. This artistic “Vignette” effect gives the watch a depth and warmth rarely found in Rolex’s more functional models.
The finish: The watch features the original gold buckle, underscoring its authenticity and collector’s value. Mounted on a glossy black leather strap, this is the ultimate dress watch for the most formal occasions.
At Amsterdam Watch Company, we admire the Cellini because it demonstrates that Rolex is fluent in the refined language of Renaissance artists. It is a watch for the connoisseur who is not looking for an instrument of adventure, but for a piece of jewelry that celebrates the rich history of human craftsmanship and aesthetics.

The Cellini line is certainly not the most recognizable or famous line within the Rolex universe. But is a range full of gems and simply stunning watches.
Rolex is known for its rugged sports watches like the Submariner and Daytona. Even the dressier options such as the Datejust and Day-Date seem to approach the dress-theme from a tool-ish, ready-to-go angle. No wonder then that it took some marketing genius to deviate from this path in the 1950’s. René-Paul Jeanneret was Marketing Director at Rolex and introduced the idea of Rolex collectors.
The notion that one person might collect multiple Rolex watches was completely new. Up until then, Rolex made specialist watches for specialist professionals. Now, the brand would focus on offering different watches for different occasions. The Cellini line, named after Italian scultor and goldsmith Benvenuto Cellini, was born.
From the 1960’s onwards, the Cellini line was used as a playground for numerous different shapes and types of dress watches. From minimalist thin, Calatrava-style watches to the extremes of the King Midas.
Today, the Cellini collection is the only place within the Rolliverse where you will find hints at haute-horlogerie through features such as guilloché dials and moon-phase indicators. Precious materials and beautiful finishing techniques are omnipresent.
The Cellini was put into the public eye by Barack Obama, who was frequently spotted wearing one. A fine choice! The Cellini line is where you want to be looking if you are after a high-end Rolex that people will not instantly recognize as such!
