Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 3919 Box & Papers
Yes, a beauty of a Patek Philippe Calatrava! Here we have the well-known reference #3919 a true classic Calatrava.
Patek Philippe launched the Calatrava line in 1932 with reference 96. During the Great Depression, the brand faced pressure to create a simpler, more affordable wristwatch, moving away from the complicated pocket watches it was known for. Fast forward to 1985, when reference 3919 was released. This model shares a lot of design DNA with the original ref. 96 simple, elegant, and timeless but with a few stylish differences.
One of the most distinctive features is the beautiful “hobnail” bezel design, which adds an extra touch of elegance. The 33mm case is crafted from 18k yellow gold and features a stunning, almost porcelain-like white dial with black Roman numerals and a classic decentral second hand.
The ref. 3919 became known as “the banker’s watch,” thanks to the clientele who appreciated its understated luxury.
Our 3919 from 1997 is in near-new condition, carefully preserved in the safe of its previous owner. It comes complete with original tags, strap, 18k buckle, box, and papers. It has just returned from a full service at the Patek Philippe Service Center.

In 1932, the year in which brothers Charles and Jean Stern acquired Patek Philippe, the name of the manufacture’s prestigious symbol, the Calatrava cross, was given to a watch collection. The first true ‘family’ of watches Patek Philippe had created, the Calatrava quickly became a classic and is still regarded today as the brand’s most iconic collection.
The design was inspired by the Bauhaus movement, a German school of Arts based on the belief that ‘less is more’ and ‘form follows function’. Since the purpose of a watch is to tell the time, these principles discouraged any embellishments which could detract from the time-telling.
The result was a watch that was at once beautiful and practical. Presented in a round case with a flat bezel and simple dial with baton indices, the art of omission in the debut model Ref. 96, came to characterize the Calatrava’s understated, yet timeless style.
The design has become a template for other brands. A simple, minimalist dress watch with a sub-dial for the seconds at six o’clock, is often referred to as a Calatrava watch, regardless of the brand. So while Patek did it first, it is perfectly reasonable to stumble upon a JLC Calatrava or a Vacheron Constantin Calatrava.
