Patek Philippe Calatrava ref.3893 B+P
Here we present the Patek Philippe Calatrava reference 3893. This model reflects a particularly restrained and elegant side of the Calatrava line. Crafted in 18k yellow gold, it combines classical proportions with the quiet confidence that has long defined Patek Philippe’s dress watches. With its 33 mm case, ivory dial, and manually wound movement, it remains a refined and understated expression of traditional watchmaking.
This particular example stands out for the balance of its design. The warm tone of the yellow gold case pairs naturally with the soft ivory dial, while the slim profile gives the watch an unmistakably elegant presence on the wrist. The reference 3893 is also known for its small seconds display and for housing Patek Philippe’s hand-wound calibre 215, a movement found across a number of refined Calatrava references from the period. The sigma notation on the dial adds a subtle detail appreciated by collectors, indicating the use of 18k yellow gold on the dial.
What makes the 3893 especially appealing is the way it sits slightly outside the often better known Calatrava references, while still offering everything one looks for in a classic Patek Philippe dress watch. There is a certain calmness to the design, with nothing overstated and every element kept in proportion. Taken as a whole, it is a watch that speaks through detail and sublte class.
This example is accompanied by its original box and papers, adding to its appeal as a well-preserved and complete vintage piece.

In 1932, the year in which brothers Charles and Jean Stern acquired Patek Philippe, the name of the manufacture’s prestigious symbol, the Calatrava cross, was given to a watch collection. The first true ‘family’ of watches Patek Philippe had created, the Calatrava quickly became a classic and is still regarded today as the brand’s most iconic collection.
The design was inspired by the Bauhaus movement, a German school of Arts based on the belief that ‘less is more’ and ‘form follows function’. Since the purpose of a watch is to tell the time, these principles discouraged any embellishments which could detract from the time-telling.
The result was a watch that was at once beautiful and practical. Presented in a round case with a flat bezel and simple dial with baton indices, the art of omission in the debut model Ref. 96, came to characterize the Calatrava’s understated, yet timeless style.
The design has become a template for other brands. A simple, minimalist dress watch with a sub-dial for the seconds at six o’clock, is often referred to as a Calatrava watch, regardless of the brand. So while Patek did it first, it is perfectly reasonable to stumble upon a JLC Calatrava or a Vacheron Constantin Calatrava.
