Het ontstaan van de naam Portuguese begint in de jaren 30 als twee Portugese zakenmannen het hoofdkantoor van IWC bezoeken. Zij vragen hen een horloge te ontwikkelen met de precisie van een marine chronometer. Dit lukt maar alleen in een zakhorloge. In 1939 lukt het IWC om er een polshorloge van te maken maar met het uurwerk van een zakhorloge. Daar door hebben de allereerste een grote behuizing. Met een afmeting van 43mm erg uit de tijdsgeest, de gemiddelde afmeting van toen was 33mm. Toen al een uitzonderlijk item!
Het algemene ontwerp dreigt door de decannia heen langzaam te verdwijnen. Tot begin jaren 90 door toeval het model weer actueel wordt. De horlogemaker Kurt Klaus, bijgenaamd ‘Einstein van IWC’, ontvangt in zijn atelier een aantal gasten. Deze spotten een Portuguese( een referentie 325 van de eerste generatie) op zijn pols en zeggen dat zij dat horloge wel willen kopen. IWC greep dit aan om de lijn nieuw leven in te blazen door een gelimiteerde uitgave te herintroduceren. Dus volgens het oude ontwerp, Arabische index, ‘Leaf’ wijzers en ‘dots’ index. Het 125 jarige bestaan werd aangegrepen als ideale gelegenheid. 1993 was het zover, 1750 stalen, 1000 rosé goud en 500 in platina. In de jaren erna kwamen er meerdere uitvoeringen waaronder ook de chronograaf automaat.
Degene die wij u hier laten zien is gemaakt van 18 karaats rosé goud en heeft een zwart/grijze wijzerplaat met appliques. De Arabische index is nog een van de elementen die uit het originele ontwerp behouden is gebleven. Het horloge is volledig in orde gemaakt door het Atelier van IWC en komt dus met internationale fabrieksgarantie. Doos, papieren, servicepapieren, originele band, een super gave set!
Wij schrijven vaak in het echt is het horloge mooier, geloof ons in dit geval is dat zeker zo. De kleurencombinatie die bij dit horloge gebruikt is, is niet op beeld vast te leggen. Dit horloge is pas 2 jaar oud, niet echt vintage dus. Toch heeft dit model zo’n mooie historie en is zo mooi, dat wij zeer trots zijn dat wij deze ‘Portugees’ aan ons assortiment mochten toevoegen.
