Ikepod is begonnen in 1993 – 1994 toen Oliver Ike, een Zwitserse zakenman die ook in de meubelindusttrie heeft gewerkt, Marc Newson inhuurde om design horloges te ontwerpen voor een ‘onderscheidend merk’. Ike was bekend met Newson als designer van zijn ontwerpen voor meubels. Het eerste horlogeontwerp van Marc Newson was de ‘pod’ en was door hem ontworpen toen hij 23 jaar oud was (in 1986). De naam ‘Ikepod’ was niet alleen een toevoeging van de achternaam van Oliver Ike maar ook een verwijzing naar de ‘obsessie’ van Newson voor de ‘pod’ en ‘capsule’ designs wat veel van zijn werk definieert.
Het eerste Ikepod horloge was de ‘Sea Slug’, bewust genoemd naar het exotische ‘oceaanbeest’. Dit horloge was duidelijk op de markt gebracht om het merk als ‘cool’ en ‘anders’ te kenmerken.
De Hemipode heeft een gemodificeerd Swiss ETA Valjoux 7750 automatisch chronograaf uurwerk, een hele mond vol. Newson wilde een perfecte symmetrie voor de wijzerplaat, dus verwijderde hij de dag van de week aanduiding en koos voor een ‘date dial’. Het uurwerk is verder gemodificeerd door de 12 uur teller van de chronograaf te verwijderen en daarvoor in de plaats een 24-uurs GMT wijzer te plaatsen, welke gesteld wordt door de pusher links op de kast. In het verleden werden deze horloges met verschillende wijzerplaten en uurwerken aangeboden. Dit is met een 44 mm doorsnede werkelijk een top design! Deze uitvoering heeft daarnaast een PVD kast en de originele band.
