Vintage: iets wat toen het op de markt gebracht werd gelijk een succes was en nu nog steeds is. Dat is een synoniem voor het woord vintage. Toch beleeft iedereen het woord anders. Waarbij de één denkt wat een oud ding, is het voor een ander de ‘holy grail’. Hoe leuk is dat?
Breitling, een merk dat al vroeg de chronograaf ontwikkelt. De grondlegger van het bedrijf, Leon Breitling , sterft op 54-jarige leeftijd en zijn zoon Gaston neemt het stokje over. Geïnteresseerd in de opkomende luchtvaart en de daar bijkomende calculaties, ontwikkelt hij in 1915 al de eerste chronograaf met centrale secondeteller en 30 minuten register. De jaren daarna gaan de ontwikkelingen hard, in 1923 komt de eerste chronograaf met een ‘poussoir’ op de markt. Voor die tijd werden de functies bediend door middel van de kroon.
Het afgebeelde model is alweer een fase verder, deze heeft 2 poussoirs. Start/stop en om alle tellers weer op nul te zetten. Gemaakt halverwege de jaren 40 is dit het toppunt van vintage. De stalen kast heeft een afmeting van 36 mm en komt uit de ‘Premier’ lijn. Met de cijfers op de wijzerplaat en in de minutenrand konden piloten berekeningen maken. Nu niet zo heel duidelijk meer afleesbaar, maar dat maakt het nou zo bijzonder. Dat is het patina van deze bijna 70 jaar oude ‘toolwatch’. Ooit een gebruiksvoorwerp, nu een sieraad om de pols.
