Rolex Datejust Ref.1601 Grey Dial
Some Datejusts feel very dressed up, others feel almost sporty. This Rolex Datejust Ref. 1601 sits nicely in the middle. Dating to 1973 and measuring 36 mm, it has the classic vintage Datejust formula, but the grey dial gives it a cooler, more understated character.
The dial is where this one gets interesting. Grey can sound quiet on paper, but here it works beautifully against the steel case and white metal furniture. Applied baton markers, slim hands, the date at three o’clock and the Cyclops above the acrylic crystal keep everything familiar, while the colour gives the watch just enough mood. Not flashy, not plain either. Very wearable.
The case does its part too. The fluted bezel brings that little bit of Rolex sparkle, while the Jubilee bracelet softens the whole thing nicely on the wrist. It is exactly the kind of combination that made the Datejust such a never ending success: elegant enough for a shirt cuff, easy enough for every day.
Inside is Rolex’s automatic calibre 1570, a robust movement from the period and a fitting engine for this four-digit Datejust. The Ref. 1601 belongs to the much-loved vintage Datejust generation, with its acrylic crystal, pie-pan style dial and non-quickset movement. Rolex introduced the Datejust in 1945, and by the seventies the recipe had become one of the brand’s most recognisable designs. This one shows exactly why. It does not try too hard, it just gets the proportions, the colour and the feel right.
A grey-dial Datejust with a fluted bezel, Jubilee bracelet and all the vintage charm you want from a 1601. Cool, classic and quietly handsome. Come see it for yourself at Reestraat 3, Amsterdam.

The Rolex Datejust is one of the most iconic watch designs ever made. We try not to use the term “iconic” too liberally, but it is surely justified here. Launched back in 1945 as the Ref. 4467, the design has been only marginally updated every now and then. And it has looked fresh and current ever since.
When it comes to vintage, two generations of Datejust are particularly popular; the Ref. 16xx and the later five-digit references. The 16xx models were made from the fifties until roughly 1978 and feature a beautifully dimensional pie-pan dial. Many of these came on folded jubilee bracelets and they did not yet feature a quickset date.
When the reference was updated to five digits around 1978, the pie-pan dial was replaced by a flat dial. The caliber was updated to now feature a quickset date. A decade later, in 1988, a new update saw the introduction of a sapphire crystal. For us, this is where vintage Datejust becomes modern Datejust.
Countless variations can be found. Different bezels, bracelets, dial colors, sizes and materials. The Datejust is one of the most beloved and versatile watches around. If you are looking for a one-watch-collection, that works equally well with shorts as it does with a three-piece suit, the Datejust is probably a pretty safe bet!
