Rolex Datejust Ref.1601 18k Yellow gold
A full-gold Datejust on leather has a very particular kind of charm. Less obvious than one on a full gold bracelet, but still warm, elegant and unmistakably Rolex.
This Rolex Datejust Ref. 1601 dates to 1960 and comes in a 36 mm 18k yellow gold Oyster case. The fluted bezel gives the watch that familiar little bit of Rolex sparkle, while the leather strap keeps the whole thing relaxed and very wearable. It is gold, but not too loud about it.
The silver dial keeps things nicely balanced. Applied baton hour markers, matching gold hands, the date at three o’clock and the Cyclops above the acrylic crystal all come together in that classic Datejust rhythm. Look at it for a little longer and the appeal becomes very simple: clean proportions, warm gold, and just enough vintage softness.
The Ref. 1601 belongs to the much-loved four-digit Datejust generation, with its acrylic crystal and pie-pan style dial. It is the kind of reference that really shows why the Datejust became such a lasting part of the Rolex story. Introduced in 1945, the Datejust brought together an automatic chronometer movement with a date window, and the Cyclops later became one of Rolex’s most recognisable details. Rolex also notes that the Jubilee bracelet was designed especially for the launch of the Datejust, even though this example now wears very nicely on leather.
There is a reason the Datejust has lived such a long cultural life, from serious collectors to public figures and style icons. This example does not need a famous wrist to make its point, though. The appeal is right there: a yellow gold 1601, classic silver dial, fluted bezel and all the charm of an early-sixties Rolex.
A warm and elegant Datejust with lovely vintage proportions and a slightly softer character on leather. Classic, easy to enjoy and very much worth a closer look. Come see it for yourself at Reestraat 3, Amsterdam.

The Rolex Datejust is one of the most iconic watch designs ever made. We try not to use the term “iconic” too liberally, but it is surely justified here. Launched back in 1945 as the Ref. 4467, the design has been only marginally updated every now and then. And it has looked fresh and current ever since.
When it comes to vintage, two generations of Datejust are particularly popular; the Ref. 16xx and the later five-digit references. The 16xx models were made from the fifties until roughly 1978 and feature a beautifully dimensional pie-pan dial. Many of these came on folded jubilee bracelets and they did not yet feature a quickset date.
When the reference was updated to five digits around 1978, the pie-pan dial was replaced by a flat dial. The caliber was updated to now feature a quickset date. A decade later, in 1988, a new update saw the introduction of a sapphire crystal. For us, this is where vintage Datejust becomes modern Datejust.
Countless variations can be found. Different bezels, bracelets, dial colors, sizes and materials. The Datejust is one of the most beloved and versatile watches around. If you are looking for a one-watch-collection, that works equally well with shorts as it does with a three-piece suit, the Datejust is probably a pretty safe bet!
