Rolex Air-king Explorer Ref. 5500
Not every Explorer needs a mountain on the horizon. Some are stranger, smaller and, to the right collector, even more charming.
This Rolex Air-King Explorer Ref. 5500 dates to circa 1958 and sits in one of those wonderfully confusing corners of vintage Rolex. On paper, it is an Air-King: 34 mm, steel Oyster case, smooth bezel, acrylic crystal and an easy-wearing steel bracelet. But the dial tells a different story. There it is, printed right below Oyster Perpetual: Explorer.
That small word changes the whole mood of the watch. The silver dial has aged with real personality, showing strong radium burn around the hour markers. It is not a perfect, clinical dial, and that is exactly why it feels alive. The warm, toasted surface gives the watch a character that only time, old luminous material and a good dose of vintage weirdness can create.
The layout stays beautifully simple. Applied hour markers, slim hands, Rolex coronet at twelve, Precision text at six and no date to interrupt the symmetry. It has the clean attitude of an early Air-King, but with a little Explorer mythology sneaking in through the side door.
The Ref. 5500 Explorer is a cult piece for a reason. It takes the adventurous language of the Explorer and puts it into the smaller, quieter Air-King format. Less obvious than a 1016, more unusual than a standard Air-King, and full of the kind of reference-detail rabbit holes vintage Rolex collectors love a little too much.
In steel, with its smooth bezel and acrylic crystal, this example keeps the wearing experience wonderfully relaxed. The bracelet makes it feel practical and ready for daily use, while the dial keeps reminding you that this is not just another clean silver Oyster.
A rare Air-King Explorer with a silver dial, radium-burn character and all the eccentric charm that makes vintage Rolex so addictive. Small, strange, honest and very easy to keep looking at. Come see it for yourself at Reestraat 3, Amsterdam.

Rolex is well known for its watches aimed at specific professionals. As such, it is no wonder that the house has a long history in specialist pilot’s watches. From the 1930’s onwards, several variations of the Oyster Perpetual bubble-back were made with names like Air-Lion, Air-Giant and Air-Tiger. These were commonly bought by RAF pilots during WWII, as an upgrade to their issued watches.
In 1945, a single pilot’s line was launched to replace all of these predecessors: The Rolex Air-King.
Interestingly, the Air-King does not feature too many true aviation features. The archetypal pilot’s watch is big, with a matte black dial and white numerals and preferably a soft iron cage to protect from magnetism. The older Air-Kings have none of that. It is, however, a beautiful and versatile line of watches that is worth considering.
The most popular vintage Air-King is undoubtedly the Ref. 5500. A dual-reference that was also assigned to an Explorer model. To complicate things further, the Ref. 5500 was identical to the Ref. 1002 Oyster Perpetual, except for the dial. The Ref. 5500 was introduced in 1957 and lasted a whopping 37 years, making it the longest-running Rolex reference ever.
Rolex discontinued the Air-King in 2014, only to bring it back in 2016 with the Ref. 116900. A bit of an odd duck in the collection, with its busy dial with yellow and green details. It is, however, a fan favorite in the modern lineup, together with the equally quirky Milgauss.
