Patek Phillipe Neptune Ref.4880/1A-001 B+P+SP

Patek Philippe Neptune 4880/1A-001 “Salmon Dial”.

In the shadow of the iconic Nautilus and the sporty Aquanaut lies a hidden treasure from the Patek Philippe archives: the Neptune. While other models opted for sleek, industrial lines, the Neptune elegantly bridged the gap between robust sportiness and the classic refinement we’ve come to expect from the watchmaker in the late 1990s.

The heart of the design, and undoubtedly its most iconic feature, is the integrated steel bracelet. This so-called “fish-scale” or “moat design” is a technical feat. Thanks to the numerous small, rounded, and highly polished links, the steel behaves almost like a fabric, instantly conforming to the contours of the wrist. The result is one of the most comfortable bracelets Patek has ever produced. Thanks to the concealed folding clasp, the organic pattern runs almost continuously, with each slight bulge in the links interacting with the light. Within the Neptune family, the Reference 4880/1A-001 holds a special place.

The “A” (Acier) reveals the steel construction, giving this model a sporty character in a collection dominated by precious metals. The “001” designation points to the dial currently captivating the watch world: Salmon.

This rich, salmon-colored dial features a refined guilloché pattern with concentric circles, creating a beautiful sense of depth. With a modest 27 mm diameter and an extremely flat profile, this quartz-powered masterpiece in miniature embodies classic feminine elegance.

The Neptune was only in production for a short time, from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s. This makes it a sought-after object for the connoisseur today. The fluted bezel, reminiscent of a ship’s wheel, subtly nods to its maritime namesake.

What makes this particular example particularly special is its rare and complete condition. The watch comes as a complete set: including the original box, official paperwork, and accompanying service documents. For the collector seeking Patek Philippe’s unmistakable quality but wanting to stand out from the crowd, this “forgotten” classic presents a unique opportunity to own a documented piece of distinctive watchmaking history at Amsterdam Watch Company.

All the way back in 1839, Franciszek Czapek and Antoni Patek founded Patek, Czapek & Cie. in Geneva. The two Polish watchmakers manufactured pocket watches until an argument drove them apart in 1845. Patek teamed up with French watchmaker Adrien Philippe and in 1851, Patek, Philippe & Cie. was officially registered and the story of arguably the finest of watch manufacturers was truly underway.

The company would amass an impressive array of firsts and records. Among which the first perpetual calendar pocket watch, first split-second chronograph wristwatch, first perpetual calendar wristwatch and for twenty-seven years they held the record for most complicated watch movement: 33 complications.

Yes, we have entered the realm of haute horology.

The house registered its Calatrava cross logo in 1887. The Calatrava would later become one of the brand’s celebrated collections and even a design template for other brands.

Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet and Vacheron Constantin form what is lovingly referred to as the Holy trinity of watchmaking. Three houses that specialized in haute horology, pushing the boundaries of mechanical watchmaking, decoration and finishing techniques.

Much like Rolex and Omega rule the everyday-watch category, the Holy trinity rules haute horology. A sentiment reflected in Patek’s motto since 1996: You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely look after it for the next generation.
