Patek Philippe Ref. 3404

Patek Philippe does rectangular watches rather well, especially when they are allowed to be a little architectural such as this amazing example.

This Ref. 3404 comes from the early 1960s and leaves the familiar round Calatrava formula behind. Its 18k yellow gold case is tall and sharply framed, with a broad sloping bezel that gives the watch great depth from the side. At 27.5 mm across, this piece remains elegant and compact, but the vertical proportions make it feel far more substantial on the wrist than the diameter suggests.

The cream dial is beautifully simple. Long applied gold markers, slim hands and the Patek Philippe Genève signature are all it needs. No seconds hand, no date, no decorative pattern. The empty space is part of the design, giving the watch a distinct mid-century character.

What makes the 3404 particularly interesting is its place in Patek’s design history. Introduced in 1958, the reference was produced for only a relatively short period and appeared in several precious metals, including yellow gold, white gold and platinum. Period examples show just how deliberately Patek played with the rectangular format here: wide bezel, short downturned lugs and a case that feels closer to a architectural design object rather than to a conventional round dress watch.

The brown leather strap adds some warmth and makes the yellow gold feel less formal, while the hand-wound movement keeps the profile appropriately slim.
