Patek Philippe Calatrava + Extract Ref. 3919

The nineties had plenty of excess. Patek Philippe kept it classic.

This Calatrava Ref. 3919 dates to 1994 and comes in 18k rose gold, pairing a slim case with a crisp white dial, black Roman numerals and small seconds at six. It is about as traditional as a dress watch gets, but the warm rose gold keeps it from feeling too serious.

Around the dial sits the detail that defines the 3919: the Clous de Paris, or hobnail, bezel. Hundreds of tiny pyramid-like facets give the case just enough decoration without disturbing the clean Calatrava formula. Patek introduced the 3919 in 1985 and kept it in production until 2006, which says quite a lot about how little the design needed changing.

Inside is Patek Philippe’s hand-wound calibre 215, with small seconds and the beautifully slim construction needed for a proper dress watch.
