Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 3434

This Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 3434 is one of those watches that reminds you how much can be said with very little. Dating to circa 1962 and measuring 36 mm, it has a wonderfully clean presence on the wrist, with all the quiet elegance one hopes for in a vintage Patek dress watch.

Here at AWCO we think the charm is in the restraint. The silver dial is beautifully simple, with applied gold baton markers, slim matching hands and no seconds hand to interrupt the calmness of the design. It gives the watch a very pure, almost architectural feel. Just time, proportion and a great deal of refinement.

The 18k gold case has a slim rounded profile, straight lugs and a warm polished finish that suits the minimal dial perfectly. Viewed from the side, the acrylic crystal adds a lovely vintage softness, while the signed crown gives the watch that small but important Patek Philippe detail. It is worn on a brown leather strap and closed with an aftermarket steel buckle.

Dating to circa 1962, this Ref. 3434 sits in a lovely period for the Calatrava. Inside is Patek Philippe’s hand-wound calibre 27-AM-400, a refined movement associated with the brand’s amagnetic watches of the period. The Calatrava line itself was introduced in 1932, the same year the Stern family acquired Patek Philippe, and became one of the manufacture’s defining dress watch designs. Its roots are often connected to Bauhaus thinking: clear lines, honest function and nothing unnecessary on the dial.

A refined Calatrava with real vintage charm, warm gold tones and just the right amount of collector interest. Not loud, not complicated, simply very good. Visit our store in Amsterdam at the Reestraat 3 to feel it’s timeless look on your wrist.

In 1932, the year in which brothers Charles and Jean Stern acquired Patek Philippe, the name of the manufacture’s prestigious symbol, the Calatrava cross, was given to a watch collection. The first true ‘family’ of watches Patek Philippe had created, the Calatrava quickly became a classic and is still regarded today as the brand’s most iconic collection.

The design was inspired by the Bauhaus movement, a German school of Arts based on the belief that ‘less is more’ and ‘form follows function’. Since the purpose of a watch is to tell the time, these principles discouraged any embellishments which could detract from the time-telling.

The result was a watch that was at once beautiful and practical. Presented in a round case with a flat bezel and simple dial with baton indices, the art of omission in the debut model Ref. 96, came to characterize the Calatrava’s understated, yet timeless style.

The design has become a template for other brands. A simple, minimalist dress watch with a sub-dial for the seconds at six o’clock, is often referred to as a Calatrava watch, regardless of the brand. So while Patek did it first, it is perfectly reasonable to stumble upon a JLC Calatrava or a Vacheron Constantin Calatrava.
