Gallet MultiChron Ref. 22210
Here at AWCo, these are the watches we love. Thirty millimetres, three registers and more information on the dial than most modern dashboards.
Dating to circa 1940, this Gallet MultiChron Ref. 22210 is a wonderfully compact example of just how serious early wrist chronographs could be. The steel case measures only 30 mm, yet inside that small footprint Gallet managed to fit a full three-register chronograph and a dial packed with timing scales. Small watch, very grown-up job.
The silver dial has aged exactly as you would hope. Arabic numerals, blued hands and the three recessed counters sit beneath a network of scales around the edge, giving the watch that unmistakable pre-war look. There is plenty to read, but somehow it never turns into chaos. The warm patina only makes all that old-school typography more attractive.
Gallet was already deeply involved in professional chronographs by this period, producing MultiChron models with specialist timing scales for pilots, engineers and other professions. Around 1939 the company even offered a remarkably compact three-register MultiChron 12, proving that serious chronograph functionality did not require a large case.
There is something fascinating about seeing so much mechanical ambition squeezed into 30 mm, especially considering its age. No oversized case required, just blued hands, plenty of scales and a proper little chronograph from one of the great under the radar names in the vintage world.
Available at Reestraat 3, Amsterdam.
