Omega Markies
In the enchanting world of the 1960s, where Parisian haute couture met Swiss precision, Omega created a timeless piece: the Omega Marquis. A stunning 1961 model is currently on display at AWCo on Reestraat, a watch that perfectly captures the essence of feminine elegance from that era.
The name “Marquis” is not chosen at random; it derives directly from the legendary marquise cut for diamonds. The case features that characteristic, almond-shaped “navette”—a symmetrical oval that converges at the top and bottom in refined points. This shape was the ultimate choice for the style-conscious woman in 1961, as it visually slims the wrist and seamlessly blends with the chic jewelry fashion of the time.
This specific model from the renowned Saphette line is a technical and aesthetic masterpiece. It features the innovative, diamond-cut sapphire crystal. The facets along the edges of the crystal create a sparkle that was praised in old advertisements as “The watch with the jewel-like brilliance.” The result is a watch that catches the light with every movement of the wrist and sparkles like a precious gemstone.
The Omega Markies is crafted from solid 18-karat yellow gold, but what makes this watch truly special is its discreet technology. It is a “Backwinder”: the crown for winding the watch is located on the back. This ensures that the flowing lines of the 16 mm wide case are not interrupted by a pusher on the side, further enhancing the watch’s appearance as a pure piece of jewelry.
Despite its diminutive size, Omega proudly reminded its customers at the time that the Markies also passed the strict Observatory precision tests with flying colors. It was Omega’s promise: a watch as small and refined as a jewel, yet with the reliability of a world champion. Finished with an elegant leather strap and the exceptionally rare, original 6mm Omega buckle, this 1961 Marquis is a rare relic of a glamorous era. It’s a watch that not only tells the time but also underscores the wearer’s status and refinement, just as powerful today as it was in the chic Parisian salons of sixty years ago.

Omega was founded in La chaux-de-fonds by Louis Brandt in 1848, although the company would not be named Omega until 1903. It is one of the most successful Swiss watch houses, both in terms of sales and historical significance.
Louis Brandt was already rather innovative before his Omega days. He developed the very first minute-repeater wristwatch with Audemars Piguet in 1892. Although Brandt died in 1903, Omega would not lose its innovative nature. Among its biggest accomplishments are the manufacture of the first tourbillon wristwatch movement in 1947 and the first large-scale commercial implementation of George Daniels’ co-axial escapement in 1999.
The biggest highlight in Omega’s history is undoubtedly the moon landing in 1969. Both Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin wore Omega Speedmasters on the lunar surface. But there is so much more to this Swiss powerhouse. They launched the very first dive watch with the Omega Marine, all the way back in 1932. That is some twenty years before the Blancpain Fifty-Fathoms and Rolex Submariner would redefine the category.
Omega has no shortage of hit collections. From the Speedmaster to the Seamaster and from the Constellation to the De Ville, with tons and tons of variations within all of those lines. You may opt for a yellow gold pie-pan Constellation or for a chunky Ploprof. There is something for everyone.
And that is before we go into Omega’s military history, including the Dirty dozen MOD-issued field watch. And we cannot forget James Bond, with his tricked out Seamasters since 1995’s Goldeneye.
No wonder then, that we love Omega so much!
