This Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 5107J is a composed modern classic from the manufacture’s most quietly iconic line. Dating to 2004 and measuring 37 mm, it has the purity one expects from a Calatrava, but with just enough modern presence to feel perfectly wearable today.

Here at AWCO we think the charm is in the details & balance. The 18k yellow gold case brings warmth and refinement, while the champagne dial keeps the whole watch soft and understated. Slim applied hour markers, dauphine-style hands and the discreet date window at three o’clock give the dial a clean, practical layout without disturbing its calmness.

The case is where this reference becomes interesting & special. It keeps the round, elegant Calatrava silhouette, but adds gently shaped crown guards that give the watch a slightly more modern character. From the side, the sapphire crystal and polished yellow gold surfaces make the watch feel crisp and refined, while the signed crown adds that small but important Patek Philippe detail.

Turn it over and watch shows an open case back offering a view of the automatic movement inside. Inside you admire the Patek Philippe’s calibre 315 SC, a refined self-winding movement from the period. The watch is fitted to its original leather strap and closed with its original gold buckle, giving it a nicely complete feel on the wrist. It also comes with service papers, a detail collectors will certainly appreciate.

The Calatrava has long stood for Patek Philippe’s idea of understated dress-watch design. In 1932, the year in which brothers Charles and Jean Stern acquired Patek Philippe, the name of the manufacture’s prestigious symbol, the Calatrava cross, was given to a watch collection. The first true ‘family’ of watches Patek Philippe had created, the Calatrava quickly became a classic and is still regarded today as the brand’s most iconic collection.

The design was inspired by the Bauhaus movement, a German school of Arts based on the belief that ‘less is more’ and ‘form follows function’. Since the purpose of a watch is to tell the time, these principles discouraged any embellishments which could detract from the time-telling.

The result was a watch that was at once beautiful and practical. Presented in a round case with a flat bezel and simple dial with baton indices, the art of omission in the debut model Ref. 96, came to characterize the Calatrava’s understated, yet timeless style.

The design has become a template for other brands. A simple, minimalist dress watch with a sub-dial for the seconds at six o’clock, is often referred to as a Calatrava watch, regardless of the brand. So while Patek did it first, it is perfectly reasonable to stumble upon a JLC Calatrava or a Vacheron Constantin Calatrava.
