Enicar Sherpa Ultra dive

After all, in the 1950s, diving became more popular. Under the influence of various technical developments, increasing prosperity and – not to mention – the film “Silent World” by Jacques Cousteau, diving became increasingly attractive and accessible for private individuals. Underwater, where possible, time is even more important than on land, so it was of the utmost importance that reliable diving watches were developed. And now the moisture seal was more important than ever!

EPSA was a manufacturer specialized in watch cases based in Switzerland. Just like today, it was in these years – we speak at the end of the 1950s – that watch brands used third parties for the manufacture of certain parts. EPSA would have gone down gloriously had it not been for the company to use an innovative and unique cabinet system: the (super) compressor cases. The name Compressor here refers to the patented method of sealing (or sealing) the cabinet. Due to the pressure of the water, the case was compressed for water-tightness.

There were several versions of the Compressor cases in circulation: the Compressor, the Compressor 2 and, as the final piece, the Super-Compressor. The first two types used the previously discussed system in combination with a snap-on lid, whereby the water tightness was therefore relatively limited. The Super-Compressor, on the other hand, used a screw cap, so that water tightness was often guaranteed up to 200m or (much) more.

Enicar was one of these brands that therefore used this case manufacturer. Yet they also made adjustments to the case themselves. Such as the ‘Bridge’ between the 2 crowns as protection thereof. Compressors are easily recognizable by the large crowns, one for adjusting time and/or date, the other for the use of the internal bezel. This’ diver is a real enthusiast collector’s item. The traces of time and use make it a diver with character. With a size of 41 mm a real ‘clock’ with a great history.
